I hope someone knows the answer to this question.

We can have mashed potatos.  One of my friends from the surgeon's office seems to think we can have any kind of potato.  Baked, Fries?  I just looked up and the fries at In -n- out burger have a lot of carbs but no sugars.

We are supposed to keep it under 50 carbs.

For the veterans, what is the reality here?

Thank you!

Sugar is sugar and carbs are carbs.  And they are all sugar.  Most potatoes are just a waste because they are mostly starch.  And starch is...sugar.

Mashed, fried, whatever.  They are a poor food choice.  And should come after you have eaten all your protein.

I probably eat 4 or 5 whole potatoes a year.  The only fries I really LOVE are sweet potato and I'll maybe have those once.  I take a baked potato and load it with butter, cheese, bacon, and sour cream, yummy.  At least that adds some protein and fat.

Now there is an exception.  Postop when you are new and learning to eat, if mashed potatoes go down well, eat them.  Once you are done healing and go to as low carb as possible, it's best to bypass the potatoes till you reach goal.  Once you reach goal, you may be able to eat them without gaining.   Some can and some can't.

Potatoes does= carbs, but it's considered a better for you carb than sweets. I doubt that a fried potato or frie has more carbs then the equivilant of mashed potatoes. The fat in/on the fries is better for you then some of the stuff that gets put in mashed potaoes.
You can make your own fries and then you don't have to worry about the stuff they use on fries at the store or at a restaurant.

Potatoes are not really a good food choice, but I don't think it matters how you cook them. I personally do eat potatoes, but I always accompany them with lots of fat and protein. When I eat a baked potato---which would probably go down well for you at 6 weeks out---I pile it full of butter and cheese.

Potatoes are complex carbs which we malabsorb some of as opposed to the simple, processed carbs, but compared to broccoli, they are way higher on the glycemic index than the average veggie.  I do enjoy them , but have to be careful with fries, for they seem to get balled up in my chest if I eat them too quickly.  Hardly anything does that but potatoes.

With the health problems that you state you are having with your DS, I think I'd focus only on protein at this time.   Fries have a lot of fat, and if the fat is going straight through you, as you've posted, you should probably stick to lower fat options until your system adjusts.

I do eat potatoes, but with the exception of potato chips, which I can seem to eat mountains of, unfortunately, they fill me up REALLY quickly.    I can usually only handle 1/4 of a large baked potato.

Hi,

I love baked potatoes and had too many of them early on when I could first eat soft foods. Now I have been trying to stay away from them due to the carbs.... but like some of the other folks said if you are going to have them load them up with the butter, sour cream, bacon, etc.... (loaded) so you get the fat and protein in.

So just don't have too many. I think they say mashed potatoes just because it is a soft food we can tolerate very early on. I found it sort of odd because at the same time they are telling us to be very low carb.

Best of luck, Terri
