I now have the RNY but because I have gained 100 pounds back, they are doing a revision to DS.
In October I am having the throat scoping and a visit with the nutritionalist and my doctor and then they will schedule my surgery.

Any advise before I have my surgery?????

I would go to the dietician more than once, ask for the food plan now (the one your Dr uses).  Look and see if it is something you can live with.  DS is much different than RNY.  The eating is different.

My Dr's ofc recommends:
80-100 grams of fat per day (after 3 months)
80-100 grams of protein per day
>50 grams of carbs per day

Make sure they put you on a liquid diet before surgery so that your liver will not be swollen.  The Dr I went to, does not do that.

If you are a carnivore then the DS is great, if you have a sweet tooth the DS is not recommended by the surgeon who did mine.  If you are a herbivore, then DS is not for you.

Right down your questions before meeting with the dietician.  Drill the dietician - don't hold back. It seems as though everyone is different about soda's.  Mine doesn't recommend before 3 months.  Remember this is a malabsorption procedure, so your bones don't need anything else to take away calcium.  Soda does.

Good Luck Esther!  Hoping the best for you!

Thank you for your advise.  I knowI have to have more fat and protein per day.  I am on a liquid diet now and because of the RNY I am not hungry.  I am nervous but excited.

Thanks again,
Esther

Actually very few dietitians (including my own and my suregeon dietitian) does not know anything about the DS nutrition requirements and it is almost pointless to get an education from them. It is more like you are educating them. They only know RNY nutrition and basicly will give you those guidelines...which are not even close to what a DSer needs.

Some surgeon's require a liquid diet, some do not. Honestly every surgeon is different, mine did not require a liquid diet. I trust his judgement :)

The whole sweet tooth thing is not really a deciding factor only because dumping is not supposed to be used as a deterant. Not everyone dumps and secondly people who do, will eat the damn thing anyway. lol The DS has the best stats for keeping the weight off weither your a sweet tooth or not.

I would watch the pop, I wouldn't even try it till 1 year post op and if you do limit yourself and give yourself guidelines. Just to break the cycle of addictive drinking. I have had one pop in the 9 months post op and it was only a few weeks ago that I had it. I know I was a pop fiend pre-op and I know I could do that again... it's just not worth it.

Only thing I can give you that is amazing advice, the best you can give yourself....stay on the forums!!! YES! Educate yourself and stay connected! Listen to the vets!

I would search the sight for pre-op must haves:) I know I have a post out there with my same question. Lots of stuff you wouldn't even have thought of :) A good way to search the DS forum history it so go to www.google.com and go to 'advanced search' in the 'all these words' box type in what you are looking for like...pre-op must haves or whatever then below in the 'site or domain' box type in www.obesityhelp.com/forums/ds THEN SEARCH! its a good way to find articles super easy! good luck and we hope to hear more from you.

I have been doing a lot of research on the DS and taking to a lot of people.  I am ready for this new adventure even though I am scared.

Hope I do as well as you did,

Thanks,
Esther
