Anyhow, now it seems so real! Please submit all your advice of things I should do before surgery and things to buy before surgery or anything that will get me thru. Please pass along any advice you would give to a close friend... Even the gross stuff. Thanks in advance for your input!
Wow! Talk about the fast track! I've never known anyone to be approved the smae day they went in for a consult! Congratulations!
I know this is going to promote some myths about the DS, but until your new configuration settles down..invest in some Depends. Early out, *never* trust a fart! Actually, it all depends on how long your common channel is. Mine is the shortest my surgeon does...75 cm. If yours is longer, you may not have as many gastrointestinal issues unless you eat wrong...which means simple carbs and simple sugars.
Protein shakes will likely give you gas early out...be patient, but...if regular whey protein doesn't sit well with you, use whey protein isolate. Most of the lactose is processed out of it. Regular whey sent me back to the hospital 48 hours after release for rehydration IV.
You may also want to check out www.dsfacts.com. There is an emergency card that you can print out that shows the configuration of your surgery, and has space for your surgeon's contact information. Have it laminated, and carry it in your wallet.
If you have any issues connected with your new DS, medical personnel can contact your surgeon. I live about 2 hours from the hospital where I had my DS, and I had a little bit of an issue, with which I had no hesitation going back to that hospital, because I knew no one would know what to do where I live. I'm 3 1/2 years out now, and my PCP allowed me to educate her, and she knows exactly what to do if I have any problems that might be GI in nature.
Get a Medic Alert bracelet or necklace and have it engraved with the name of your procedure and your surgeon's name and phone number. They have some very upscale ones now, 14K gold with diamonds, but a regular one will do just fine. I'm sure your surgery will go smoothly, but it's the post-op life that is a real mind-blower, because many doctors have never seen a patient with a DS, so they'll be utterly baffled by your new anatomy, should the need arise for emergency abdominal treatment.
Make sure your surgeon removes both your gall bladder and appendix as part of your DS surgery. That will eliminate the possibility of emergency abdominal surgery for gallstones and appendicitis.
Prepare to be amazed!

Yippee, another dr. Leslie patient!! I am actually going to Abbott northwestern. My tentative date is oct 15.
They submitted all my paperwork to insurance which is health EOS and then Abbott said they would call as soon as they heard anything. Well, insurance actually called me to let me know and said they would be sending Abbott my approval but it might take up to a week for them to get it. My case manager said that she just wanted to let me know as soon as she knew. Now I just have to wait for Abbott to get the paperwork because they do not schedule a for sure surgery date until the approval is in hand.
