Vitamins?

Ok...I have been doing research, and on my surgoens website they have the following info about vitamins after surgery:
Vitamin / Mineral Supplementation
Multi – vitamin with minerals (Centrum or equivalent)
Begin taking one daily now.
Increase to two daily after surgery and continue always. For the first month you may use two adult chewable multivitamin with minerals (Centrum or equivalent).
Calcium:
Begin taking 1200 mg now. Calcium citrate (Citracal with vitamin D) is a better absorbed form of calcium with less stomach acid as is the case after surgery. Two Citracal tablets provide 1260 mg calcium. For the first month post op, a chewable form of Citracal may be used or 2 Tums three times daily. Continue calcium always.
Vitamin B 12:
Two weeks prior to surgery begin taking 500mcg vitamin B12 daily. Continue B12 always.
Iron:
One tablet, three times daily after surgery
For Duodenal Switch Patients:
Follow the above guidelines except:
Increase multivitamin to two daily and add one ADEK vitamin supplement. Increase Calcium to 1800mg daily.
This seems really low compared to what I have seen others mention on here. I do NOT want to get sick. What is the average vitamin doses you would recommend to the new patient? I know it depends on labs, but this as a base seems off.
*I am aware of vitaladies monthly supplies, but  I am trying to find out if I can get them on my own, as we are on a budget. She averages abouts $120 a month, which seems high to me. Im not trying to be rude or start any drama, just my personal opinion. Also, I want to know what I need each month, in case my needs change.

It's a decent start, but ditch the ADEK - it's expensive and not as effective as taking them seperately and you're able to tweak the dosage you need.  You can do it cheaper than vitalady's collection.  I get my A (10,000iu), K,  D (50,000 iu), E and Copper from her.  The rest I'm able to piece together locally and stock up every time a BOGO sales happens.

It depends on the surgeon too.  Mine asked that I stop taking any supplements whatsoever a week before surgery and didn't want me taking anything for the first three weeks - he reluctantly agreed that I could take the 2 chewable multi-vitamins and 3 tums a day but felt I was a little obsessed with the vitamin thing....

what is the reaon for the B12?  Are your levels low?

B12 is a requirement for RNY patients.  Most DSrs do just fine without it.  The money saved on vitamins you don't need can be directed to those that you really do need

My surgeon recommends 3000 mg daily.

And Val is spot on taking ADEKs separately

I have no idea yet what my vitamin levels are. I go in on Monday for a complete physical and evaluation. I am trying to do my research htough ahead of time. I like being prepared. This is what I am trying to figure out,...what is needed, what isn't and how much.
