I am between 2 doctors one doctor says I should get the bypass the other doctor says no I should look into the ds surgery to have max weight loss.    Well I asked the First doctor about this and  this is what he writes "Dr. Joys does not recommend the BPD-DS surgery as there are to many long term issues that occur with this procedure, including bone frailty as well asyour body will reek of feces."  so Have any of you had this problem??   ahhhh decisions!!

I've been going to support group 4 years now. 3/4 of the patients have had the DS (I'm a sleever myself) Don't know of anybody that has had bone fraility. Obviously this can happen to anyone but supplementation is key here especially with bypass surgery. Will the feces stink,  good chance. I've heard some women say  they can clear the house on a good day. So what compared to good health they have beano, devrom, gas x to combat this stuff no big deal.

DS is the Cadillac of WLS go for it.

No, your body will not stink of feces. Your feces will stink of feces, and probably much more so than pre-op. Bone frailty can certainly happen post-DS, if you are not vigilant with supplementation, but can  be avoided if you get regular labs and supplement accordingly.

Surgeons who are not qualified to do the DS often discourage their patients from having it. Please don't let an RNY surgeon steer you toward the surgery they specialize in. They want your business. If you have DS, they lose your business. End of story.

Best of luck!

Errrrr, NO - 7 yrs out and none of those problems.

Bone frailty can occur if you don't get enough calcium, and worse things than that occur if you don't pay attention to your nutritional health, and it's sad that he didn't add the RNY as having the same risks, because it does.

You need to understand that there are only around 50 surgeons in the world who do the DS.  The other surgeon won't recommend it because he doesn't do it.

Go for the D.S. My surgeon, Dr. Kemmeter says its the best for reaching goal, keeping it off, Nsaid use, and retaining the pylorus. Its all about  the business  of  booking surgeries with non D.S. performing surgeons. They will say anything negative about any surgery they dont do. I have heard of many making up all kinds of untruths about the D.S. to persuade prospective patients to have their alternative surgeries. Bone health is an issue for everyone, D.S. or not. Calcium supplements are easy to use. I havent heard of any bone problems from my surgeons D.S. ers. Calcium is monitored with the labs.

Keep in mind not everyone is capable of maintaining the vitamins, calcium, and protein levels.  D.S. surgeons will evaluate your ability to handle the D.S. requirements long term. Sure everyone wants to lose all their excess weight,  and keep it off, but fail to see they must take charge of their health, be their own advocate, even instruct their PCP's about the fine points of the D.S. Since my D.S., I have educated 3 of my PCPs, oncologist, OBGYN, neurologist, vascular surgeon, therapist, and gym trainer. I am their first patient with the D.S.  My new current PCP, quickly admitted she didnt  know anything about caring for a D.S.patient.  Thats OK  because we can work together if I know all about it she said. Her first question was how to stop the weight loss ? Easy, with more carbs to slow loss the weight is maintained within a 5-10 lb range. We must educate ourselves, and bring full current lab results to each and every Dr visit. They do appreciate us being on top of our medical needs.

Every D.Ser must have lots of protein, with food, shakes, and protein snacks. Create your own protein food list, geared to your tastes. Daily fluids must be tallied to total  above 64oz a day. Vitamins and supplements are monitored by individual blood draw labs several times a year. Dont count calories, count carbs.  Carbs are counted and  limited during the weight loss phase and beyond for maintaining goal weight. carbs do cause gas. The amount of carbs, and the type determine how much and how odorus gas is. You are in controll by food choices. More protein  = less gas. Smelly bathrooms can be found in every home and out and about. Thats what air fresheners are for. Pocket size sprays are very helpful. I rarely use it, because I am usually all done first thing in the Am at home before I leave for the day.

Ohio is very close to Michigan. you should consider coming to my surgeon. He has a superior reputation nationally for D.S. and all the WLS options.  He works with long distance patients. I like the practices team approach, they have every aspect covered for WLS of any kind. You will get the correct scoop about the D.S. and if its the right surgery for you. Theres lots more to consider than gas......

I wouldnt want any other type of WLS. D.S. or nothing !!!! ;-)

Since you are in Columbus, OH, my surgeon, Dr. Margaret Inman is not that far from you.  She is part of the Meridian Surgical Group in Carmel, IN (suburb of Indianapolis)  and operates from both IU Health and St. Vincent's Bariatric COE.  St. V's is the mecca for bariatric surgery in Indiana and surrounding states, and they were among the first hospitals to offer it.  I knew about them when I was in college, and that was in the late 1970's to early 1980's.

I'm not sure what your insurance requires, and if you have to stay in-state, but if it allows, give Dr. Inman a shot. to my knowledge, she is now the only surgeon in Indiana who performs the DS. I started out with someone closer to home, (Northern Indiana) but he died before I had my surgery.

A couple hours in the car is worth a lifetime of permanent weight loss!

I don't think she can do DS @ IU Health - at least when I inquired about it last year with her and IUH they didn't offer it. She does it at St Vincent though.

That's odd...I thought she was doing the DS there when it was Clarian...I could be wrong, though.

Thanks for the info!  My bad!  At any rate...she's a great surgeon!
