Hello All,

I'm 9yrs yrs out, highest weight 322, lowest 182, currently 260, down 5lbs this last week. I was not eating enough food, taking my protein shakes or my vitamins and because of my wrongdoing I am currently malnourished. My blood levels are in the toilet. Vitamin D (5), Vitamin a (21),PTH Intact (203), Alpha-Tocopheraol (1.9 - Vitamin E deficiency), Hemoglobin (5.7).

I went back to my surgeon who ordered the blood work prior to my visit. I beg every DS'r to seek a physician that will not only order the right labs but knows what we need to live. I have started my journey over as of a week ago. Tracking my meals in MyFitnessPal, eating right, taking my vitamins and drinking my Protein Shakes. I am not cleared to exercise until I get my labs in check.

To those of you considering this or any other weight loss surgery please follow the advise of those who know. Your life depends on it. My goal is to reach 165, 95 lbs to go.

Bless you all

I'm so glad you're getting back on track. Are you local to NOVA?  Support group is this Tuesday at 7PM and Elariny's office. Cameron runs the meeting and is a good dietitian. We have her on the DS wavelength.

MajorMom, I went to see Dr. E on last Wed and also met Cameron. It is because of that visit I had a wake up call and got my act in order. I am currently local to NOVA. So the support group is actually at Dr. E's office?

They recently changed the support group to the office from the hospital. A couple of us meet at Swee****er Tavern at 5PM before heading over to the office for the 7PM meeting. You're welcome to join us. We're a very small group, most of the time, but that we we get to talk, share and ask questions. The last time we packed a room was when Vitalady came through town. Cameron has already asked how to get her to come back. :)

ICSDREAMS-

I know what you are going through, although it doesn't seem like you got quite to the point that I did.  My 6 month labs ( I'm 3-1/2 years out, my surgeon has me visit every 6 months with complete labs), were in the toilet, too with deficiencies in Vitamin D, prealbumin, zinc, PTH (high), iron and vitamin K.  PTH is the hormone that kicks off bone leaching, and signals the stomach to begin producing more acid for the process.  If you ever get an excess stomach acid symptom with your DS, throw some calcium at it, and it will stop! It's a great solution for me when the pharmacy runs out of my omeprazole (acid reducer).  I just completed a month of weekly infusions of calcium, multivitamin and iron.  I now have to wait a month to get my redraw, so the labs won't be artificially high.  I'm back on track with my vites and protein.  I am one who believes DSer's should *never* completely let go of their protein shakes!  These were my worst labs ever, and due in part to a major life event (my Mom passed away, four days away from her 93rd birthday). I have been having calcium issues from the word "go", and I now have osteopenia.  Hopefully, the Reclast infusion I had ahead of the nutrient infusions will stop the bone leaching.  Some of it is helped along by the fact that I am post-menopausal, so bone loss is going to be a big deal for me from here on in.

Life happens, and though we DSer's need to be darn near 100% compliant, we are human, and prone to error.
