 Hi,
I went to a bariatric center here in my home state to do my 3 month program I finished that program this month. I had my phone consultation yesterday with Dr Kemmeter for my DS. I called the bariatric center today and requested my medical records and told them I was not having the surgery there they do not offer the surgery I want, she goes do you mind me asking what it is. I informed her it was the DS and I get are they still doing that???????? Do others still hear that? I guess it kind of shocked me. Left me pretty much speechless which  isnt easy.  Just wanted to share.

I haven't had that happen. The only anti-DS conversation I've had was with a bariatric surgeon who didn't perform the DS.  I asked his opinion of the DS and he said that the postoperative aftercare was "too rigorous for common patients to adhere to" and that "usually I don't see my patients very many times after surgery because they just stop coming. I wouldn't want to think about someone out there potentially killing themselves because of an operation I had performed."  I guess he wasn't convinced that there are people in the general population who may actually take an interest in learning what they need to do to properly maintain themselves after a life-altering surgery.

BTW, Dr. Kemmeter is a great surgeon and a great guy too!!  Good choice!

They probably meant the forerunner to the DS, which apparently had terrible results: http://www.dsfacts.com/history-of-duodenal-switch.html

Your old bariatric surgeon is not skilled enough to do the modern DS. THAT's why his receptionist never heard of it. Period.

Kemmeter is a good surgeon and a good person, from what I understand. Best of luck!

Just want to add that I have been blessed to have Dr.Kemmeter as my surgeon. Not only does he excell as a surgeon, he has great bedside manor and really connects with his patients. More often then not, you don't get both (and I'm an RN, so have worked with a lot).

Nicolle I had read that before about the earlier ds that was done and I think your right I was just surprised they don't keep up but your right the surgeon does not do the ds.

I have yet to meet Dr Kemmeter in person  but I really connected with him on the phone. He said he could tell I had done my research and I said yes I have been researching for a while and I must tell you I have research you and messaged your patients and asked about you and I have to tell you that not one person had a bad word to say about you. He said oh thank you for that but obviously you have not talked to my wife! So he even has a sense of humor. He seems like a very caring person.

Obviously an uninformed person who believes what they are doing is the best and never takes the time to learn anything else!

She's just not well-educated about the bariatric world. Even if, as someone suggested, she was thinking of the immediate forerunner of the DS, the BPD---well, yes, they DO still do that. In some few cases, it really is the better option.

She could be thinking of hte old JIB, and no, they DON'T do that any more, thank goodness. Lots of folks DIED from that one.
