Atkins is anti caffeine and anti instant coffee.  So you need to make filter decaff coffee.   How important is this for a DSer to lose weight?  Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Thanks, I always wondered. I just don't get why Atkins would put that in his diet book - it's not like he was selling special Atkins coffee :-S

 I just had my meeting with my surgeon who suggests avoiding coffee for 6 months. First couple of months it's because caffeine is a diuretic and may interfere with your body getting all the fluids it needs. There is also concern that it may be hard on your new stomach and causevcid problems.

Yes, all that diarreah does get you dehydrated easily.  I keep water by my bed and drink about 8oz overnight.

Actually, I never drank coffee very much until I became a DSer!

Decaf hazelnut is a very important ingredient for my shakes.  I'm three years out, and a foray into PCM early out, and a very dear DS friend's experience taught me to *never* completely let go of them.

I made one based on a friend's recommendation, and it was  love at first sip!

PCM = Protein Calorie Malnutrition

It's a very bad thing, and especially easy for DSer's to get into, as are vitamin and mineral deficiencies, if you don't get all your protein in every single day.

When PCM happens, your body literally cannabalizes itself, drawing protein from muscles (muscle wasting) and other organs to get what it needs.  I learned that from a fellow DSer's protein issues, and one reason to this day I still drink protein shakes.

DSer's have very little leeway when it comes to nutrition!

OK, thanks.

I'm managing ~75g protein a day at the mo (I'm 3 weeks out, I can eat harder food from week 4).  I'm taking 3 Centrum multis a day and I'm hoping my Vitalady order will arrive any day (it's with UK customs at the mo).  I went for the 90 day pre-packaged vites.  I also ordered some K2 as suggested by MajorMom.  I'll have my first labs done at 3 months (well 2nd labs, as I had them done pre-op too).

In my next batch I'm going to get Bone Booster Complex for my calcium http://www.vitacost.com/Vitacost-Bone-Booster-Complex-with-M CHA-Vitamin-D
as per Kirmy's advice to me.

I took a multi vite for 6 months pre-op and did at least a 100g protein a day during that time.

I'm really trying to take on board advice from vets.

I tried to do now caffeine but I couldn't do it. I only have about a mug of coffee and a mug of tea a day as far as caffeine goes. I am almost 4 months out. never had a problem.
