In Texas RNY to DS Revision Dr. Stewart or Provost?

I would recommend the revision to DS instead of band-over-bypass.  You are lucky that Dr. Stewart is in the same town as Dr. Provost -- so it wouldn't mean much difference travel-wise for you.  I recommend you ask this as a new thread, to get more replies.  If one weight loss surgery has already failed you, you probably need more than restriction can provide.  If you have an extensive history of dieting, your metabolism may be shot, meaning you would need the big gun of malabsorption (in addition to restriction).  If you are not up for a very high protein diet, lots of supplements multiple times daily, and labs regularly to see if you need to adjust the supplements, then I would suggest the vertical sleeve gastrectomy for your revision.  At least a sleeve would remove much of the grehlin-producing area of your stomach (tells you you are hungry), that remains when you have a band or RNY gastric bypass.  Lots of people never find their "sweet spot" with their bands, and more and more of them are having to be removed.  The ASMBS, the professional association of weight loss surgeons, has a recent release warning that bands are having worse results.

Ditto what NightOwl said.

I had an RNY in 2002 an that failed.  I just revised to a DS 3 months ago.  I flew from Alaska to California to have this surgery.............. after fighting insurance nearly 3 years for an approval.

I have been on this board for quite some time, even though I mostly lurked, while waiting on insurance approval, I did read & research everyday.

I have seen the DS be peoples 3rd surgery.  Yes, their 3rd surgery.  I even saw a BOB (Band Over Bypass) get revised.  I have also seen a band-to-RNY and then to DS done.

Just saying what I have seen on this board.

Dr. Provost was trained on DS, but does not "believe" in them, he likes the sleeve or RNY, so therefore it's a bad idea to go to him for any kind of DS, let alone a complicated revision.

That being said, Dr. Provost was willing to save my life, and not Dr. Stewart, so I can't rave enough about him personally as a human being and a skilled surgeon. :)

But yes, I still recommend Dr. Stewart for all complicated DS surgeries in the Texas area.
Duodenal Switch hybrid due to complications.

Good decision and good luck! Dr. Stewart rocks and his staff is great, especially his nurse Sue.  I'll keep good thoughts for you. I'm almost 2 years out from an open RNY to DS and I love it and feel great.

Duodenal Switch - you can read all about it on this website.  Out almost 3 years with the most excellent results. Yes, Dr. Stewart is the best and one of the few who do the revision. Similar to the sleeve but more involved. Call and get an appt. with hime and meet his nurse Sue - she is amazing. Good luck!!

Check out dsfacts.com.  There is a ton of info there specific to the DS.  There's also a  pretty strong following of DSers on the proboards.

your surgeon does not do the duodenal switch bariatric surgery, so I am not surprised that he hasn't provided you with any real information on this wonderful life altering option.

you should find out more about the DS from DSFacts.com, from the veterans on this board or on ProBoards Weight Loss Surgery Board.  Then seek out a surgeon that actually performs the surgery you want and need.

DSFacts has a list of vetted, experienced DS surgeons - they are few and far between.  Many of us travelled long distances to have our surgery of choice.  The DS requires considerable skill/experience and takes time to perform, so is only undertaken by skilled surgeons prepared to forgo the money making  factory churning out RNYs
