I can tell you from my own experience that protein-loading helps curb the carb cravings when I feel like my craving is getting out of control

It would depend on what you are eating.  If you're not eating a whole lot of protein, then increasing protein and decreasing other things (carbs) you are eating will help.

If you're not eating that much other stuff but are eating 20 ribeyes per day or 15 protein shakes or something, then yes, you could be overdoing the protein so much that you're absorbing excess calories and causing weight gain.

Usually it's the first one.
