Mindy could use some advice and encouragement from those who had open surgeries. She's still in a lot of pain but using the pain pump. I told her getting the pain under control was more important than walking a lot at this point--
Anyone have some pointers for her?
Thanks,

I feel her! I was in uncontrolled pain right after surgery which extended my stay in recovery for a few hours and after I was in my room it was horrible, I was shivering and moaning. I had a dilaudid pump but also had breakthrough IV and PO pain medicine.
ASK for it! They wont always just give it to you. I hope she feels better soon. Oh, and alway**** that pump before getting up or turning over or anything until its controlled.

my husband and I both had open RNY which is an entirely different kettle of fish but he waited until he hurt to ask for pain mgmt and never caught up. So I hit the button before getting out of bed, and whenever I was allowed to by their time rules.
even when they took me off the pain and onto pills, I asked for them every few hours. for the first 3 days. One nurse asked me what my pain level was and I said 1. She said I can't give you pain pills then. I told her I didn't WANT it to get higher and asked a different nurse. By the time I left the hospital I never took another pain pill.
I hope she feels better soon.

I was lap so i understand that is a whole other ball game and her pain level is probably to high to come off of the pain pump but i couldnt get my pain into a more manageable level until the doctor put me on oral liquid pain meds. I would push the button it would make me loopy and tired i would fall asleep and wake up 30mins later in a good bit of pain, then i would start the cycle over again. I begged for oral meds the second day because i couldnt stand it.
Im sorry she is feeling so poorly. She is in my thoughts and prayers and i hope she can get her pain mgmnt in control and start feeling better. It gets better, it truly does!
