Thank you Eloise.  I figure addiction is addiction but I am certain that the way I metabolize alcohol now had some effect.  I'm not so certain that I was replacing food with alcohol but I am not discounting it.

I never had a hangover since I started drinking in September.  I think hangovers were what kept me from drinking too much when I was younger.  Don't know.

Becky,  First, congratulations on your admission and in taking steps to face the problem.  It is not easy but, it IS the softer and easier way.  It is very difficult to look in the mirror and to deal with the judgements we make that cause us to stumble into addiction.  You ARE worth the effort to get out of this hole.  God loves you and I'm sure many people do, too.  I pray for your recovery.  Take it one hour at a time.

I have found a resource here on OH:  http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/crossingtotransferaddictions/

I hope it will add to your tools for recovery.

Good journey to you, though it may be painful, you will get through it!

Warm regards,
Diana
I hope you dance with enthusiasm... and a million other things joyful!

Becky,
I am so sorry you are going through this, but the important part is you recognized the problem and sought help. I am praying for you.

It does happen.  Thank you for being open and honest.  How are you doing?  Alcohol is a tough addiction.

I have found I bounce around between addictions.  Sometimes its alcohol.  Sometimes it's a combo of self starvation/extreme exercise.  Sometimes its drugs (I have a number of PRN meds I can take for pain and anxiety).  When I was/am on chemo I will admit I tried smoking pot to help with the side effects.  Sometimes I smoke when I am not having side effects.

My therapist knows all this.  We are trying to deal with things.  Things are getting better since I admitted I HAD a problem.

The first suggestion you have already done- you admitted you have a problem.

My second suggestion you have also already done- you found some support in AA.

Another suggestion may be a therapist or a counselor.  I never thought it would help me but it does seem to be helping.  I also talked to my doctor who helped me by prescribing the right combination of medications for my depression/anxiety/panic/OCD.  Which helps a lot.  If you have some other issues in play, seek help for those, too.  It helps.

I found that video blogging on my personal website helps me.  You may just want to keep a diary or a journal of your feelings versus telling the whole interwebs what is going on in your life but sometimes just getting it off your chest and out there seems to help and even organize your thoughts and feelings.

Hang in there.  It's a process (goodness do I know it's a process).  Lots of hugs and love to you.  Please let us know how you are doing so we don't worry about you?

I am in therapy.  I was in therapy for about 6 years then I moved and tried 3 different counselors but gave up.  Once I moved back home I waited too long to get back in with my former therapist but I have been seeing him again for a couple of months.

I am doing okay.  I appreciate your asking.  I haven't had a drink in almost 48 hours now.  I wish I could say it is a breeze but it isn't.  I don't have any alcohol in the house and the county is dry on Sunday so I'm glad about that.  I have phone numbers to call if I feel I need to.

I went to two meetings yesterday and one today at noon.  I am going to a meeting tomorrow night at 6.  I plan to go to a meeting every day for a while.

I need to find a sponsor and I am struggling a bit with how to do that, but someone gave me a pamplet about that today and I am going to read it tonight.

I also was given a Big Book and I am going to start reading it too.

So here I am.  I'm not drinking.  But I am craving.

The way to find a sponsor is to find a woman who HAS what you WANT. If she has been in the program over a year, and has done all of the steps with a sponsor, then she would be the one that I would ask.

Years in the program does not always equal quality of sobriety. Use the same wisdom that guided you to put that drink down and go to AA in the first place, to guide you in choosing someone to sponsor you. And if she doesn't meet your needs, it's not a problem... just find a better one! You don't have to find the greatest sponsor in the history of the universe, first try!
