Pregnancy after DS?

I’ll chime in. I just gave birth to my second post DS baby. I am almost 4 years out. My first pregnancy I got pregnant by accident WAY too early at only 6 months post op but thankfully with the work of my surgeon, regular OB, high risk OB I had the most normal pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. I lost weight during my first pregnancy, 70 to be exact. Prior to getting pregnant I had lost 60lbs. Three weeks after I gave birth I was down another 40lbs and then was able to lose 20 more a month later. January this year we found out we were expecting again after only one month trying. This pregnancy was a little more difficult since I had awful morning sickness and then started getting awful pains which turned out to be from an intestinal hernia I had prior to getting pregnant. I also had my bowels knotted so ended up having emergency surgery at 20 weeks pregnant. Thankfully the baby was ok and the pain resolved itself after. I was then put on bed rest the last 7 weeks due to major swelling. Doctor said it wasn’t due to my DS and it was normal with pregnancies. My baby boy was born 3 weeks early and was almost 7lbs. He’s a healthy baby boy. After giving birth I was 15lbs lighter than when I got pregnant. Throughout this pregnancy I didn’t gain any weight. This was great for me because I was looking to lose 10 lbs I had gained in the last 1.5 years. If you have any questions you may send me an email at [email protected].

Also I want to add that prior to my DS I was told having babies was going to require lots of fertility treatments.  I had PCOS and didn't even get a period for over a year at a time.  I was with my now husband many years and we never had a scare and I never took birth control.

Here's a photo of my 2 DS miracles and my before and after.

I had a great post-DS pregnancy.  I didn't have to take anything extraordinary except more iron.  A couple of my labs got a bit wonky but nothing was really far out of range and my CNMs and the peris they consulted with were happy with everything (as was my surgeon.)  I really couldn't keep up with my iron, but I didn't need infusions.  I was just on the low end of ferritin by the end. I had a repeat cesarean and it went fine and my ferritin came back to normal by 6 weeks or so postpartum.

I ate like a horse and my baby is a beautiful little genius boy who walked at 8 months and says Mamamamama all day now at almost 11 months.

Oh, if you plan on breastfeeding, it's also doable after DS, although some moms have struggled with supply.  My supply has been fine.  My son is on the slimmer side compared how to his older pre-DS sister grew, but he always seems satisfied and is developing perfectly.  I suspect his slimness is due to me being less insulin resistant in pregnancy and his different nursing behavior.  My daughter was a comfort nurser and wanted milk all.the.time, but my son only nurses when he really needs it.

As one of my specialists said, "Yes, and anyone who says different is either lying or covering their ass". I love that doctor.

Alas, getting pregnant post-DS was not in the cards for me (my body reacted ugly to the extra hormones and I ended up with a hysterectomy), but I applaud any woman who choses to make that decision.
