"Emaciated" they say.... (just venting)

My BMI isn't quite "normal" yet very close.  Sometimes I look in the mirror and cringe at my collar bones.  When I put on my watch, I can barely stand to see these sticks where I once had arms.  Did I mention that by some standards, I'm still considered to be overweight?

Yet, by objective data, "i.e.' labs" I'm healthy. I keep telling myself that I'm healthy on paper even if I shudder at the image in the mirror.  It's only my subjective opinion where I think I'm too thin.  Yep, I went from a size 34 to a 14.  In the fashion world I'm still plus sized, however I'm having a hard time adjusting to the me that exists now.  It sounds like the in-laws are having the same problem.

Perhaps you'll just have to keep repeating the "My doctor says I'm OK." to them until they leave you alone.  I also advise against lying.  It is after all, their problem.  Even if they keep vocalizing it to you.

I hope you're right. I really like my in-laws and get along with them, I'd hate for that to change.

Maybe you ought to tell her/them that, too.

That may happen next time I visit. I generally respond to guilt trips by shoving them square up the ass of the person hoping to inflict one. I'll give them some time to adjust just in case that's what they need, but once the time is up that's going to be the end of it.

I have told people in advance that they are probably going to think I am getting too skinny eventually and that I may even go below my goal before my body decides where it is going to stay and that I may rebound after that point. (I read that here.)  So just tell them to relax because it's just part of the normal progression for the DS. I wouldn't lie but they don't need all the details every week either, do they? I might just be a little more vague but let them know there is nothing to worry about!

I'm sure they are in shock. You and hubby live with your DS every day and they don't. Since they were skeptical from the beginning, seeing you now so close to goal is simply freaking them out.

Is it also possible that they're concerned that your weight loss might affect your marriage?? Just saying... Stories like this are everywhere.

I'm leaning towards blaming shock, or that's what I want to beleive.

Luckily the marriage is rock solid and getting stronger all the time. Size was never an issue for the hubs.

I agree with what everyone has said about the shock.... I had people ask me if I was sick or had cancer... Keep in mind that your appearance is likely going to be shocking for some people for quite some time. Now that I'm over 2 yrs out I don't get that anymore, people are just used to me being half the size I was... Give it time

Yeah I'm wondering if I am overreacting, they don't see me all the time so each time I've visited they see me get smaller and smaller. Once the weight stabilizes they should probably get used to it eventually. Hehe, I hope

Let me add that most of us seem to have a weird, deflated, bony look to our faces, neck, shoulders, etc, like gravity is pulling all the fat down to our midsection at first. We do look kinda emaciated, even way before we hit goal. (I know I do.) But I understand that after a few years our body kinda evens out a bit better and distributes the remaining fat a little more evenly. That and a good plastic surgeon...lol.

Anyway, I know it's incredibly rude of them, but I don't think they are completely imagining what they perceive.
