Let the cat out of the bag???
I had my DS on 10.11.2011. I told my parents and my husband. My father and husband wanted me to tell everyone. I said no. If they couldn't keep their word, then I would not include them in the circle of information about me as I was going through my surgery/recovery. I told them that this was NOT about them...it was about ME. I was firm and they new I meant business.
I did talk to my husband's HR rep to find out about insurance, etc. I know her very well. She tried to tell me how silly it was that I was having the surgery, that I had five kids and my husband could never survive without me, and I may not wake up after the surgery, blah, blah, blah. And that is EXACTLY why I did not want to tell anyone!
There is enough information on this forum and others, specific about the surgery and specifc about the surgeons, for you to make your own adult decision.
That said, my surgery was on Tuesday; on Friday, I said that I thought I would be able to talk about it with some friends in a couple of weeks. By Sunday, I started calling my sisters, in-laws, and best friends and telling them the whole story. EVERY SINGLE PERSON I SPOKE TOO WAS SUPPORTIVE! THEY WERE HAPPY FOR ME! My surgery was over, and no one could try and give me unrequested advice.
I have told a few friends that I had my gall bladder removed. Those friends are the ones that I know can't keep their mouths closed.
I emphasized to all my friends that they not speak about it with anyone, because no everyone is going to know. I asked them to respect my decision and my request that I keep this a private issue to me. Again, everyone has been very supportive.
When you are ready to talk about it, feel free. How much you tell, you decide. Sometimes telling my big-mouthed friends that I had my gall bladder removed, kindof feels like a little white lie.....especially when my mouth is making the words! But there are private issues to us all that not everyone needs to know. And there is certainly no lie about that!
Best wishes on your surgery!
