3 years labs-Vit. I take now.
I have been to the dark side, I mean the real dark side of life and I do not want to ever go back there again. I was a lightweight going into this DS and not in the best of health. With a BMI of 34.9 the day of my DS surgery I knew coming out of the gate I needed to keep my vits and protein high. I knew I would hit goal fast, and would have to ride out the rest of my window. What I did not know is how many surgeries and other medical conditions I would have to overcome. My DS took me to Endo doctors, hemo Doctors, Heart doctors, Cancers Centers, so many specialist and finally Mayo.
I met good doctors, nut cases, good surgeons, and wacko jobs. Where I started my journey was here on OH and where I end my journey will be here on Oh. I put my full trust in the Dsers who went before me. Studied and read between the lines on so many with severe malabsorption like mine.
I took massive amounts of Vit A and D. From Vita-lady. I worked with my endo and a nut. from the beginning. I took massive amounts of calcium. I choose not to have a revision and choose to ride it out for 3 years. The 3 years came and went this last Sept.16. Shortly before my last surgery of the hernia repairs and TT, I knew if my labs were not good I was sending a email to a revision surgeon. Just did not want to keep up doing what I had to do to keep the weight on and all.
If one makes the decision to ride the DS out in my opinion you must have very good insurance. Labs must be checked every 2-3 months. You must have someone to help take care of you. You are not going to be able to work. You should not have children or someone else that you need to take care of. You will need to have a good support system. Having a chronic illness for so long can lead to depression. You should see the cup half full, not half empty. If you do not have patience and cannot find splendor in the grass, then you need to get revised and move on. It can take up to 2 years from what I have read for your villi to grow so more absorption will take place. I had many surgeries and seemed like I was always in the recovery stage and starting back from ground zero with the sleeve restriction. I was weak, I was tired, I was bed ridden, I was below a normal BMI for a good while.
Here is my update. I am 5'7. weigh in at 130. Three weeks out from my last surgery. Doing great. I drink 64oz of water a day. Flush all the stuff out. 48oz of dec. tea. Double egg protein shake in the morning one in the afternoon double in the evening. that's 125p., Eat 50 from food and that makes 200p a day. will do this for another month and then cut back to 2 protein drinks a day and get the rest form food.
Mayo was right. After being on the antibiotic therapy for 4 months my labs shoot up. I cut back on all my vits 2 months ago, and had my labs drawn last week. I am crying as I type. I played this hand close to my heart and it paid off. I am free. I am feeling better than I have in 3 years. No revision for me.

untreated. You do not have to have gas. Bloating is a symptom and the only symptom for some.

(((Karen))) I think you're done a wonderful job with so much stacked against you. You didn't mention the back surgery you went through...not DS related but significant.
You probably know a lot more than me about vitamins and protein these days but I don't think I would reduce the shakes until you're consistently coming in in the 4's on albumin. They don't have to be double shakes just several small ones throughout the day. Food is just extra.
Is the vitamin K1 correct? 100mcg 2 x a day doesn't seem like very much.
I'm so glad your labs have turned around with the antibiotic. Something so easy yet no one knew to look for.

OK MOM, I will do my shakes! Truth be told, I am so sick of them. Three months ago I was doing 6-8 a day and after surgery with the restriction it was all I could do to get in 2. I worked my way back up to two doubles and a single. I think not eating so much food, and having to do the shakes for so long it gave me a deprive feeling. Missing my small meals through out the day. I had to let go of eating and started just on shakes about 6 months ago, pain with the hernia, and new founded restriction was the reason. Now after this surgery it seems still more shakes. I know someday it will all level out and am so grateful for the shakes, they are a life saver.
In my 3 years this is the highest my albumin has been. So glad you kicked me in the pants and told me I must stay on these shakes because without them I will not be able to keep my protein and albumin in low normal range. I knew this deep down, just wanted to live in a little denial until I get my food back.
Yes, the vit K is correct. It is prescription from the Endo. I said to myself if this did not work, I would switch to Vitalady's. It worked.
My endo wrote me out prescription for Mag. Ox.- Mag. Cit.- Cal.Cit.- B12. I go into CVS today and we will see what they do or do not give me.
I was taken MK4 as MK7. But stopped that 4 months ago. I wanted to see If my labs would be able tell the difference, or my bones. I get a Dex. scan in 2 weeks, will post then.
My Hemo still tracks my anemia, but I am able to keep my Iron in the high range with the profreinn. Thanks for the insight.
