Attended my local support group and heard...

... a vet DSer (~5years out) explain the DS to someone who is preop RNY saying that "The reason I had the DS is because it allows for malabsorption of fats and sugars... and I like fats and sugars! So I've done really well."  The preop RNYer replied saying "Oh yes, the RNY allows for malabsorption as well!" And the DSer followed with, "Oh yes, they're basically the same."

It made me cringe to here someone that far out from surgery misinforming someone - even if they were going to go through with the RNY.  Granted, this vet DSer has dropped 150lbs so she must've done something right with her tool.  Nonetheless, I politely interjected to correct her.  She quickly shook it off as a mistake saying, "Right right, fats and protein, not sugar!"  The RNY'er seemed set with her surgery so I did not go too far into the differences in malabsorption (I'm not exactly an expert - but I do know the RNY malabsorption component becomes less powerful as time goes by, contributing to often regain).

Have other's had experiences like this?  I felt a bit awkward attempting to inform someone as I am preop as well.  But when I pull the trigger on surgery I want to be the very best informed/prepared as I can be!  I did direct the RNYer to OH in hopes she can gain the quality info that is out here.

Oh sure, rather frequently in fact. Usually it's when I encounter a postop RNYer who has no clue what they had done to themselves or how to live right with it. Sometimes they are educable and sometimes they aren't.

Only a fraction of the DSers in the world post here or on similar forums. There are, unfortunately, way too many undereducated, underinformed, careless and just plain stupid folks out there. We have quite a few right here, too, but at least they are making some attempt to access useful information, I hope.

It's unfortunate people don't take better control to educate themselves before a surgery like the DS.  I, for one, am thankful that so many DSers who've done well (or even had their bumps in the road) choose to share their knowledge here!  I'm sipping from the firehose 'round here!

Julie - I'd be interested in chatting with you sometime as I'm looking into Dr. Kemmeter in Grand Rapids as my possible surgeon. (And yeah, It'd be great to malabsorb sugar too! ;-) )

Add me to the list that would love to malabsorb sugar too!  I was stupid and tried 1 bite of a donut from the cider mill.  Granted I'm only 3 months out, but it made me sooooo sick!  Whether it was the carbs or the sugar, I NEVER want a bite of donut again.
