I have a new prescription my doctor want me to take the nurse who told me to pick it up said it was because my Albumin (sp) is low but the information that I received from drug store says it is calcium and that it is a phosphate binder used to reduce the amount of phosphate in the blood of patients with kidney failure.  I need to see if anyone else have taken this or know about it and can tell me if it affect us in anyway.  Thanks in advance

Now that I see your labs, I am really concerned about this medication - it is used to bring down extremely high phosphorus levels - yours are low, so why would a doctor give a patient a drug that is only going to make your phosphorus only lower - that is dangerous.  Please question and do not take.

You mention a prealbum of 19.1, what is your albumin?  Even if you can't get in that much food - not sure your history,  - can you drink protein shakes?  Drink 2 to  3 protein shakes per day, plus food and that should bring up your protein levels, including albumin and prealbumin levels nicely.  My protein shakes/drinks have 35 - 45 grams of protein each and taste delicious - if you want recipes, let me know

your hemoglobin and hemacrit are more concerning.  How is your ferritin, iron, B12 and folate?  You are anemic of some type, the question is whether it is iron, B12 or folic acid.  In rare cases it can also be B6 or copper.

I am anemic in iron and folic acid.  I would love your shake recipes.  Albulin is 3.6 range is 3.4-4.8 total protein is 6.5 and the range is 6.4 to 8.3.  I am uping my vitamins and protein.  My protein is actually improving it was a 12 now Im up to a 19.

I did some research and I can't understand why it would have been given to you for low albumin levels - I would call your doctor.  All you need to do for low albumin levels is to increase your protein intake.

Phoslo is for severely high levels of phosphate in end stage kidney disease.  It is a form of calcium that lowers the phosphate levels without raising the calcium levels.

Please call your doctor and ask, many times wrong prescriptions are given out -sometimes due to poor handwriting or just errors.

I called my doctor and told them I was concern about medication waiting on call back.  When the nurse called she did tell me to increase my protein by mouth but that did not make since because my protein was still low but it came up a good bit in a week since I have been able to get protein in by mouth.

I'd wait for a call back from your doctor before taking it.  Your phosphorus level is already low.  I'd want to be certain I wasn't given the wrong prescription by mistake.

That is exactly what I am doing I do not take any medication till Im sure it is the right medication to treat me.  Mistakes happen everyday and I have had a hard time and do not want anymore slip ups.

I, too, am confused by the prescription for this med.

PhosLo is used a lot in patients undergoing dialysis.

Low prealbumin and albumin in a WLS patient should first be treated with protein.  What's your intake like?

You're anemic. What are you doing about this?
