Major Mom

I had lunch with a whole bunch of women today...women you might have enjoyed.  There were probably 150-200 of us...women vets from WAY back.  I took my mom's cousin.  She was a SPAR in WWII...and will be 91 in December.  She was thrilled to be in a group photo with another dozen and a half--give or take--women vets from all branches, all of whom were 90 years old or more.

We had a decent band and some other random entertainment but I think the highlight of the day was the ROTC/Junior ROTC dudes who showed up to do color guard duties AND to ask the ladies to dance!!!  Amazing!  Some 20- 35- 50- 75- and 90-year-old ladies dancing with young men who were 18-20...at best!

I hope all the VA hospitals manage to come up with something like that.  The older gals really seemed to enjoy it.

I just lost my beloved aunt and her funeral was last weekend. She was in the marines for 28 years starting in 1952!! Those women vets are amazing!

The honor guard at her funeral was perfection at its best. She got 3 volleys of seven guns. My dad (her little brother) was given her flag with a shell from each volley to tuck in her flag. Taps was played live and was clear and proud. Even the groundsmen at the National Cemetery stood at attention with their hands across their hearts when Taps was played. I could see my aunt at attention next to the honor guard.

She was a marine through and through.

I'm glad you got to spend time with those wonderful women and hear their stories. To have them dancing with all those young men must have been magical!

I'm very proud of our vets.

I work at the VA Hospital here in Montana. I see the vets everyday! I enjoy them sooo much and also my favorite vet... my husband. Give thanks to your vets, they have put much on the line for our country!

For Halloween I get to dress up as my staunchest supporter and a hero to me.  Staff Sergeant Mark Decker, who now answers to husband.  I can finally fit into his uniform.  As a member of the local VFW we have both met some interesting American heroes.  If you ever have time, stop by the VA hospitals they love to have people listen to them.
