Woke up choking last night

About 45 minutes after I went to bed for the night I woke up choking on a frothy version of the protein shake I had for a snack before bed. I was burping it up and it was blocking my throat and nose. I thought tums may help (and give me a little more calcium) so I took some but woke up again in the same condition less than an hour later. I don't think I have ever seen anyone write about something like this? Any feedback is appreciated.

Sounds like reflux or gerd or something. Can you sleep on an incline?

I was sleeping soooo inclined I could have been upright! Maybe my head was lower at that point. I had some reflux after the first half of surgery last year but never this badly.

Could be reflux.  Are you taking a PPI?

I take one 20mg omeprazole in the morning. I think I need something for th night. Even the morning dose doesn't help much. I was very shocked to wake up with a mouth full of fluid feeling like I m drowning - never experienced that.

Try taking 20mg in the morning and 20mg in the evening.  And definitely don't eat close to bedtime.

I've had this happen and it's reflux to the max. It's also very annoying, scary when you first wake up and nasty. The only way to combat it is not to eat or drink a thick shake so close to bedtime. This allows your tummy to empty. Then, a PPI will help with any acid left that could urp up during the night and irritate your esophagus. Sleeping on an incline and/or on your left side helps as well (something to do with the way your tummy lays inside you). Talk to your PCP and let him/her know this is happening.

Thanks, it was scary, when I woke up I was coughing like a mad woman, loud enough to wake the house. I will have to leave some time between last shake and bed. Thank you for the tips. I will talk to my PCP about it.
