phosphorus labs
My two year lab results are trickling in and one test shows that I have high phosphorus levels. My PCP's nurse called this morning to say that I should eliminate that supplement. I think that the only source I am getting is in my multivite. In researching, I find that high phosphorus may be a sign that calcium isn't being processed correctly. Also my urinalysis showed that I am spilling protein. level was 30. Any advice out there?
(I plan to submit my labs results when they all come in. )

I would be inclined to see a kidney specialist. According to this article http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002424.htm "Excessively high levels of phosphorus in the blood, although rare, can combine with calcium to form deposits in soft tissues such as muscle. High levels of phosphorus in blood only occur in people with severe kidney disease or severe dysfunction of their calcium regulation."
And I believe that protein in your urine may also be an indication of a kidney problem... or "it may be a transient elevation due to an infection, medication, vigorous exercise, or emotional or physical stress". http://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/urine-prote in/tab/test
How is your Pth? Your serum calcium? Secondary hyperparathyroidsm can cause elevated phosphorus levels (which can be caused be renal failure but with us DS'ers is usually caused by calcium malabsorption). Your doc needs to look at the total picture, and you should be seeing an endocrinologist (or if your kidneys are involved, a nephrologist).
Oh - I just noticed your statement about the protein in the urine. Hmmm......please keep on top of this.

Is that correct thyroid TSH 0.05? IF so, that isnt' elevated at all, that is on the low end of normal range - .3 to 3.0
Phosphorus generally goes hand in hand with calcium and can also be due to kidney problems. You need more information from your labs - calcium, vitamin D, PTH, creatinine, BUN - if your creatinine and BUN are normal then it isn't due to a severe kidney problem. Protein in the urine of 30 isn't bad. I have that all the time. My Endocrinologist did a 24hour urine a few times just to be sure and it was always fine. You might want to have this to be sure. It was when my protein went up to 100, that they got really concerned and it turned out to be severe kidney stones. THis is another thing you might want to be tested for - very common after WLS.
If your creatinine and BUN are both high, then you need to see a nephrologist.
If it is related to your calcium and PTH, then you need to see an Endocrinologist.
