Its been four years since my DS surgery, Friday I had a horrible experience.
I went to a neighbors house I consumed a 4-6 oz glass of white wine.
About 15 min after drinking the wine I blacked out, smashing my face.I dont remember anything about remainder of the night.

I have had red wine with no reaction....
Does anyone know what the heck happened to me?

Thank you

A friend on another board had something similar and it turned out to be dehydration and low potassium. You might want to see your doc and get some labs done just to be on the safe side. I hope you're feeling better today. Please take care and keep us posted.

Go see an internist.  Do not wait.  This could have NOTHING to do with your DS.

GO SEE A DOCTOR ASAP.  Blacking out could be a sign of something serious.   Better safe than sorry.

I mean really - you black out and have memory loss and you plan to wait WEEKS to see a doctor?

THANK YOU! Where is common sense these days? I black out, no memory, my neighbors don't call an ambulance, and I'm not overly concerned, but I'm going to come to OH and see what you guys thing? Um.Hell.to.the.no!

I have had the same thing happen a few times now, and it is difficult because I never really know what is going to bring it on.  My surgeon believes it is reactive hypoglycemia, but seeing as he is very elusive I have only been able to communicate with him minimally through e-mail.  It actually just happened to me a few weeks ago, and I am going to get my labs checked.  A year ago when it happened I had my labs done and nothing was abnormal (except moderately low iron).

I can tell you that whenever it has happened to me it has always involved alcohol (in pretty small quanities) and has been either wine or a regular (not light) beer.  Sometimes I can drink these and be fine, but on rare occasions, these blackouts happen (I am usually out for a while- long enough for an ambulance to be called).  I drink pretty regularly- 2-4 times a month.  If I drink rum and diet coke I am completely fine.

This past time by the time the ambulance arrived I was consious again (friends estimate it about 10-15 minutes).  By the time they checked my blood sugar it was 55 and my blood pressure was very low.

So I know I am not a ton of help, but definitely go see your doctor.  I know it is so scary and confusing because you never know when it will happen.  I have just had to learn the very hard way that I am unable to ever drink wine or beer because it isn't worth the possible effects.  Good luck!

Gosh I'm sure glad you read my post.

The reading I have been doing led me to think it was reactive hypoglycemia, anemia or dehydration.

Unfortunately no one called an ambulance for me,I was brought home and tucked into bed...scary part is I remember nothing after the black out.

I can drink red wine, have been for 3 years.I cant drink beer because of the carbon and obviously white wine.

Your absolutely right,it has been a very scary way to discover that my DS body shouldn't consume alcohol.

DS surgery was the best thing I have ever done...giving up alcohol pales in comparison !

Thank you for sharing.

Do not assume that this is something like "my DS body cannot consume alcohol"  - you have no idea why this happened.  And you have had other alcohol with no problem...

This could have been a TIA for example.  It could have NOTHING to do with the alcohol.

GO SEE A DOCTOR ASAP.

Lots of DSers drink alcohol with no problems.  DO NOT IGNORE THIS AND DO NOT WAIT.

I did camp at the Dr's,just home.

She is testing me stem to stern.
CT scan, referral to Neurologist, apt with bariatric Dr,full set of labs.

Shes concerned that it was a black out, with no memory of the occurrence and no warning then no memory of the rest of the night.

Thank you for your concern,I appreciate it :)
