Exhaustion at 3 1/2 months with exercise

Hey there everyone!  I am 3 1/2 months out and have a questions for you guys.  I have been exercising (zumba) three times a week.  I absolutely love it.  The problem I am running into is that I am absolutely exhausted in the afternoon on the days that I exercise.  The classes are from 10:30-11:30 on MWF.  Today I feel just blah.  I had a protein shake this morning and 4 cheese crackers with PB before the class.  I had water during and after the class.  I had 2 string cheese when I got home.  At about 1:00 I was ready to collapse.  The kids went to grandmas and I slept for three hours and I still feel exhausted.  This happens every time I exercise.  I felt fabulous before and during the class.  Do I need more food/carbs?  My ferritin is 8 but my hemoglobin is normal.  Is that the culprit?  Or am I just doing too much too soon?  Another thing, there was quite a bit of jumping in todays class.  I started doing it but quickly had pain to the left of my incision.  The pain is always in the same place.  I mentioned it to Dr. B at my 3 month appt and he said it was probably the muscle.  So, I still can't do any jumping....is that normal?

You might try another protein shake after you exercise too. I just was talking to my son about that a few minutes ago. Also, I really really don't like to see ferritin that low. What are you taking to supplement iron and how much, and do you think your doc might refer you to see a specialist in case you need an infusion?

I don't know about the pain around your incision. Maybe it's a little early for a lot of jumping. I dunno.

Hey there Gina!  Yeah, I am in the process of trying to get into a hemotologist to figure out the ferritin issue.  It has been plaguing me for a few years now.  I am taking 180mg Vitalady tender iron with C every day.  I had been taking two caps and increased it to three after my labs.  I am also trying to get a script for proferrin forte if I can ever get ahold of the nurse at the clinic, ugh!

Ok, sounds like you're on top of it. I currently take 300mg of Tender Iron and 1 Proferrin ES...don't know if you want to try that or just see what the hematologist says.

Yes, I take all the Tender iron together in the mid to late afternoon with 2 mg of copper. I shifted Vitalady's schedule a little to work around my schedule.

I'm taking Proferrin forte 3 times a day. We'll see how the next lab draw looks.

I'd consider myself anemic with a ferritin of 8. And yes, you're probably doing too much, too soon.

Hi Sweetie.  Yep, that's how I feel too.  I work out for an hour with a trainer a few times a week and he's no joke.  I called him today and told him I need to take a break.  I think I'm anemic, but I'm having blood drawn tomorrow morning to find out for sure.  My bruises don't go away and I'm constantly exhausted, especially on the days I work out with him.  I just can't handle it anymore.

Might be time to bump up the Proferrin.

Based on what you describe I think its a combination of things. First, you're only 3-1/2 months post-op and you're doing alot of exercising. IMHO you're definitely not eating enough before your class. And no matter what your hemaglobin is, you are anemic with a ferritin of 8.

Personally I wasn't cleared for exercise until 4 months post-op and then I had to slowly build up since I had never exercised before.

I think I would dial things down a notch or two until your body is completely healed from your surgery. You had major surgery less than 4 months ago. Give your body a chance to heal.
