Kathleen,

Thanks for putting that out there.  You've had great success.  I'm so happy for you.

I need to lose about 2 more pounds for a normal BMI .  I still seem to be slowly losing at over 2 yrs out...so may get there yet.

Of course all the veterans offer great advise!  I love them all.

The DS is a tool for weight loss, not a cure!  We do need to be careful.  For me, I can still have carbs, but if I have too many without some protein, I get a terrible stomachache. This goes for simple sugar too.  I won't say I'm glad, but it's nice that it reminds me to watch my intake & eat more protein or I'm going to feel really bad for a few hours.  Also, remember the volume your stomach will hold after surgery is so much less, you can't eat as much as you could before, so eating some carbs along with your protein will work after you've reached goal. I don't know if people who say they can eat whatever they want really can -----

I can't eat anything and maintain.  Nope.  Can't.

I wonder if the BMI people are maintaining makes a big difference?  I am maintaining a pretty low BMI (145 lbs, size 6 at 5'8.5").

I'm also getting very little exercise.  That has to play a part as well.

So all that to say I think it is more complicated than just "eat anything".

This is from last thursday.  I think it answers your question, too.

Thank you all so much for your candid and thoughtful responses.  I already DO FEEL different!! I don't CRAVE sugar like I used too.  I have a couple bad days where my carb intake was closer to 100 than 50.  Everyday I wake up with a renewed hope and strength.  I feel better than I have in decades!!! (120+ lbs gone {from highest) forever) I am doing ALL I can to get as close to goal as possible.  Since I started at such a high number, I can only pray to come somewhere close to goal.  I don't imagine, at the end of WL phase, it should be too hard to stay between 50 and 100 carbs for life
Thank you again for all your support and guidance.  Don't know what we'd do without this resource.

I haven't read any of the replies, but I will say NO, I don't think that many DSers eat whatever they like and not have regain or gastric reprecussions. I say this b/c I've seen people respond to posts like this saying they eat whatever they want, no regain, no gas, etc. Then, in other posts, they will say this or that gives them gas. To me, it's black and white. Either something gives you gas and regain or it doesn't. But maybe I'm narrow minded..........I just don't like the talking out of both sides of the mouth........

Gas and regain are two separate issues.  There are lots of things that give me gas.  But the regain occurs with simple carbs.

But I agree that it's absolute bull**** if somebody says that they can eat anything without regain or gas issues.

And see Elizabeth's post above - look how long out people are, always.  Things change dramatically with time.
