Hi everybody.  I am discourgaged and need some help.  I am 11 days out from surgery (DS with gastric sleeve) and haven't been able to get anything but sherbert, juice and water down.  Anything elsehas caused nausea and extreme gas pains.  I promised not to gripe about this trip since I voluntarily did this to my self but I am so hungry and getting weak.  Any suggestions will be helpful.  Yes, I am on Nexium and taking Gas X tablets.

Hmm we werent even ALLOWED to try to eat anytihng until 14 days post op...  just protein shakes and water.   You shouldnt worry... just work HARD on gettign a bare minimum of 64 oz of fluid and what protein you can... in shake form...  you dont have to be able to eat yet... heck I'm 11 weeks out and I have days I cant eat either... today and yesterday for instance... cant keep anything down at all so I'm resorting to fluids and protein shakes... it happens.  The weak thing everyone can relate to its so normal to feel that way!!!   Right now you just have to get through it... hang in there!

INCREASE your fluids. How much fluids are you getting? Fluids is all you need at this point. Are you dehydrated?

Fluids: water, flavored water, protein shakes, SF popsicles, broths, watered down SF pudding.

Be careful of fluids with sugar. And be careful of fluids with sugar alcohols. And be careful of milk.

Many of us find that sugar, sugar alcohols and lactose give us terrible gas and diarrhea early out.

I'm sure there's more I just can't think of.

What she said. NO fruit juices, no sugar of any kind (I suspect your sherberts are full of sugar). That will give you gas like you won't believe.

Try Chrystal light drinks, unsweetened tea with sweet'n'low, ice cold water, warm weak coffee or tea, chicken broth, protein drinks. Not being able to eat at your juncture is totally normal. Your stomach is so swollen and battered and bruised it's not in the mood.

Thanks for the tips.  I guess I should have been more specific when I said eating, I meant from the liquid diet we were prescribed.  I have tried soups (broths, cream of mushroom and chicken, etc.).  I have been drinking Celestial Season's Black Cherry tea early in the morning and it does help.  I am guessing I am just frustrated being hungry.  I think the sherbert does have surgar but I am talking about getting 4 or 5 small bites down before I am done.  I am drinking 2 -17 oz bottles of H20, plus 17oz of decaf tea along with what juice (low sugar or no sugar added) and soup I manage to get down.  I am probably about 70 oz total a day in fluids.
Again, thanks so much for your voices of experience.  You knowledge is so very helpful!!

Sherbert & sorbet give me gas from hell & I'm 21 months post-op, some people are more sensitive to some things than others, just how it is.  I still can't do milk products at all without bloating & gas.  Did you know that cream of mushroom & chicken or any other cream soups are full of milk?  They are!  I wouldn't do anything with milk or sugar in it, regardless of whatever your diet instructions are.  Based on this board's collective experience - & that's A LOT of people - some standard items that are "ok" to eat as you progress can indeed cause nausea, bloating, & gas.  Trust us!!!  You MIGHT find that protein powders also give you gas from hell.  They do for me.  If that's the case, try a soy or rice based protein powder instead of whey (which is milk).

personally I would stay away from sherbert,it is nutritionally zero yuck.  sherbert and juice depending on how much you intake and depending on how long you have been MO your nausea may be due to reactive hypoglycemia.  um forget about "eating" so early PO, make sure you get in enough fluid, dehydration can cause nasea, try sucking on a tbsp of p butter every 2 hrs or so, that will also help.  if you are nauseated, take FREQUENT small sips, you will feel like you are drinking all day, but keep track to make sure you get in some good volume,  and frequent bits of p butter, throw the juice and sherbert down the sink, all that sugar will cause GI distress in a DS patient.  Gas X will not help that situation, hope you feel better

Just a recommendation:  if you're hungry, contact your surgeon and ask if you can try something off the soft foods list, such as soup.  It's still light, but has a little more "weight" to it, which may help curb your hunger a bit.  I was on soft foods when I left the hospital.

I also agree with folks that you can try up your fluids, including drinking more protein shakes.

The first few weeks can be really rough.  Hang in there!
