WOW thanks everyone for the info i really did not intend to offend anyone..

lmao @ going blind & masturbating - i told my boys that as a joke
lyss - i am sorry you were bashed for asking a question these boards should be for support and information, attitudes left out
the peron who told me this is a very well educated medical professional, so that is why i asked. i do however suspect it was said because her office specializes in RNY which is another revision i am considering

No worries, you haven't offended anyone! Unfortunately, it isn't uncommon for medical professionals who don't do the DS to spread this misinformation. In some cases, I think they actually believe it themselves (just like they believe we all have diarrhea all day long).

And because I feel the need to clarify: Lyss most certainly did not get bashed. I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but this incorrect characterization is really bothering me. Here is her prior thread: www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/4201263/Side-effects/#34443030.

As you will see, there was ONE negative response, the rest of the comments were all straightforward answers to her question.

It may have been a medical professional, but it wasn't a well educated one. Either that, or not an honest one.
There are some people out there who genuinely believe bad things about the DS that are not accurate. There are others for whom, well, wls is a business, and if you decide to have an operation that that doctor or group doesn't do, they lose business. Sad but true.

I think people are sensitive about some topics because we run into the same misinformation (or lies) so many times. So don't take it personally, any anger is directed at the person who doles out the bad info, not you. And the real shame of it is that most of the people who get this misinformation aren't on this forum, where we can address these issues, so they have only bad information and make bad decisions.
And for the record, I don't smell, and the other DS'ers in my support group don't smell. You can put a whole room full of us together and we don't smell. Really.

Lyss and Sophielyn,
This question is sensitive because a lot of times either the person has gotten misinformation from someone that either had a different surgery type and they are spreading bad information because they don't know any better (or are intentionally doing it) or got the information from a surgeon that is trying to sway you toward a different surgery that they actually perform.

In a third case, there are trolls that come to this site and spread misinformation intentionally because they think it is fun.

I can tell you, I had surgery 2 months ago and I have not experienced any odor issues. I have noticed that my Gas and BMs do smell differently than PreSurgery but I would not say it is worse or unmanageable.

Hope this helps!

Lyss... I am so sorry you felt attacked for asking a question.  We are all here to support each other and answer every question.  You know there are no such thing as dumb questions.

Unfortunately, here on the DS board we have people come over and ask questions about the misconceptions out there.  Some people truly are curious, some people are just trying to start trouble.

Now for my reply:  I stink really bad if I don't wear deodorant or shower for a few days.  But don't think that has anything to do with the DS.  Just bad hygiene.  When I actually take a shower and wear some deodorant I smell nice and clean... because I am.

My breath will stink if I don't brush my teeth too.

And I survived the surgery.  The mortality rates are the same for the RNY and the DS.  But the success rate for the DS far exceeds that of the RNY.  And don't even get me started on the quality of life comparison... because the DS would be bacon, eggs, and butter better than the RNY.

Good luck Sophie, my guess would be that the Dr.s office either has misinformation or spreads misinformation. I got the same thing from a RNY Dr. before my surgery. Don't worry about it.

Hey Sophie,
Yeah, I was all set to have a RNY and wasn't really excited about it. I didn't want to deal with Dumping, there were several foods that I like to eat that I heard I wouldn't be able to eat with a RNY (like dense meats, Steak, Pork Chops etc) and finally I like taking NSAIDS (Advil mostly) and you cannot take them post RNY.  I had never heard of a DS and thought that the RNY was the only option I could have, I needed both restriction and malabsorbtion and I thought I was going to have to "punish" myself and have a RNY. With a RNY, I knew some people that have had that surgery and a few years out they begin to gain weight back, I was worried about that. I don't want to go through this huge step of surgery only to gain it all back.

Then I heard about the DS on this board and started to research this surgery and it totally fit my lifestyle. I can eat the foods I like (Steak, Grilled Chicken, Bacon etc), I can take my NSAIDS as needed, I don't have dumping etc.

I love the surgery results so far, I felt like with a RNY I would be on a diet my whole life and I don't feel like that with the DS.  The DS has the best sucess rate of any of the surgeries and I was happy with that statistic. I did have to travel to Texas to have my surgery but insurance paid for it completely. I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Feel free to PM me if you have additional questions that I can help with! Kj
