oooo
I don't do alcohol (pre or post op), so I can't speak to that, but I don't have any issues with sugar, ice cream drinks, shakes, sodas or the like.
Pre-op, I thought to myself with regards to sugar "okay, with the DS, there is a chance of pooping.....with the RNY, there is a chance of vomiting or passing out. Which could I live with.....the urge to poop while I'm driving or passing out behind the wheel?" I chose what made sense to me.
Please know that not all DS'rs have "issues" with sugar or white flour for that matter. It is an individual thing
With regards to the bathroom.......I used to have exploding "D" when I was a pre-op....when my tummy let me know, I had a 30 second window before I would bust.........POST-OP--If I feel like I have to go, I can hold it (the longest was just shy of one hour) My IBS is no more and I have more control than I ever did pre-op
DS'rs don't typically smell. Some might go thru ketosis and have a "unusual" odor about them, but for the most part, we smell like average people.
It is a scary process trying to predict the future, but if you have to, write a pros and cons list and work it out that way.
Best of luck with your decision!

Can you speak more to the IBS issue? I've never been diagnosed or evaluated for it, but I'm quite sure I have it.
take yesterday for example. We leave work, I'm fine, we get 10 minutes en route to home and I'm hit suddenly with hot/cold flashes, an on and off immediacy in the "staging area," so to speak, and mild nausea. I know that I cannot make it the additional 20 minutes to get home - I had to pull off at the next rest area and rush into the toilet. This is not a terribly unusual occurrance for me, and I wonder if it's anything like dumping.
You said that your IBS resolved with DS? Is that because of the change in diet, or the alteration of the anatomy? I'm very interested!!

UMMM, it is when I just received a letter that they were going to send the info onto my insurance company today, and I really needed to make a FINAL decision by the end of the day. Oh, and a decision that I will be living with for the rest of my life BTW!!! Thank you very much!
Hmm.... Let me think .. riding catararans with a drink at hand or weight loss and better health.. I was an avid beer drinker pre-op and I dont have the desire to even have a beer at all.... Having the DS is a life choice....At the title of your thread I was thinking it was for a REAL serious problem that you were confronted with... My wife RNY vet will also choke a horse after a bathroom visit... Life is not fair in WLS vs having it all....

Not to be a smart arse, and forgive me if it sounds like I am, but what I wanted people to comprehend from this post is NOT about the pina coloda. Like I said, it is an every other year thing. I go out on the catamaran with my husband and children to go snorkeling .The POINT that I was trying to make here is that we do things that require us to be out for a while, and there may not be any bathroom facilities available. What if I am in a meeting with a client, on a plane, or diving? I think this is a very legit concern.
I have a friend who had the RNY and her hubby is always making fun of how bad the bathroom (and the rest of the house) stinks after she uses it. I think she stinks worse than I do and I'm 4 years out, she's 5 years out. She also has to eat 1200 calories per day to maintain. I eat about 3000 to maintain. When we go out to the wait staff ask her if she doesn't like her meal because she obviously eats very little of it. I, on the other hand eat like a normal person. Good luck on your surgery. I'm sure you'll be happy with the DS!
