"...my arse is feral."

Kirmy, you crack me up. I shal have to find a way to work "feral arsehole" into my next conversation with my BFF, just to see the look on his face. (*grin*)

Sugar has little effect on me, but if I really over indulge, I do get some gas an hour or so after I eat or drink the sugar. It's never given me the runs or given me any kind of "urgent" gotta go feeling.

You're not going to know how a PC will effect you after DS surgery until you have DS surgery and are completely recovered, there's just no way to know how your system will react.

Kerry did you get gas before the surgery if you ate too much sugar or high carbs...

Nope, but I would dump like mad on sugar or anything with milk in it. Remember, I had a RNY since 1980.

It seems kind of crazy that you're considering ruling out an entire surgery in favor of what sounds like an every-other-year occurrence (the boat ride with the pina coladas).... unless I am being daft and you mean to use the boat ride as an example of the sort of situation that scares you off from the DS....

It's true that you won't know if sugar will give you gas or diarrhea until AFTER you've been switched. You may be one of the people who tolerate sugar OR you may be one of the people who live on splenda and stevia and avoid sugar at all costs (which is a good idea anyway, since low-carb is the way to go after your DS).
I personally don't get diarrhea from sugar, but I tend to get bloat-y/sick to my stomach if I consume a large sugary drink (like a frappuccino, etc...) so I avoid it. I am at my goal weight, so I give myself a bit more leeway sugar-wise, but I tried to avoid it completely the first year post-op.

As far as your other concern (urgency, constant smelly gas, etc...), I never had urgency to the point of pooping my pants, lol.... my bowels were a bit unpredictable at the beginning, but I've settled into a normal rhythm.
The guaranteed stinkiness-inducer for pretty much ALL DSers is white flour. That's a definite no-no if you are worried about smells/bathroom issues!
White four and sugar alcohols (-itols) give me gas.... it stinks, it's uncomfortable and disruptive. So I avoid ALL white flour. That means no cookies, cakes, bagels, white bread, etc.... To me, it's more than worth it.
If I am eating 'cleanly' (no white flour, no sugar, high protein, high-ish fat, staying hydrated) my gas and poop is not a huge issue.
Yes, my bowels are more of a preoccupation now than they were pre-op, I am forever tinkering with my diet and my probiotics, but I am a size 4 and I think it is a super worthwhile trade-off.

That is absolutely what I am talking about! The sort of situation, Thank you!   My husband, children, and I do alot of things together, which require us to be out for hours.  These issues were a concern of mine, and like all issues I felt that this absolutely needed to be addressed.  I do appreciate all of the replies, as I needed to have a full understanding of what I needed to expect post-op.  I know that everything that you read on the internet can not be taken as gospel.

There is a potential for bathroom issues after the DS or RNY. Check out these threads about nasty, stinky gas that RNYers experience:

www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/3974250/Farts-after-the-surg ery/

I've seen dozens more, these are just two I was able to dig up the fastest. Any malabsorptive surgery can cause stinky gas and bowels, be it DS or RNY. This is largely controlled by what you eat, and there are other things such as probiotics, that can also help to offset it.You will not poop, fart and smell all the time unless you are eating all the wrong foods and not addressing the issue.

FYI, if you are a dumper with RNY, you can pretty much forget about the Pina Coladas to begin with.

I understand that you are trying to think of all eventualities here, but I would urge you also not to make your surgery decision based on the pina colada thing. I mean, there are definite compromises and adjustments that need to be made with any of the surgeries. If your body doesn't like pina coladas (or getting caught in the rain - sorry) after the DS or the RNY, I bet you can come up with a fun new vacation plan. And you'll have the advantage of being healthier and in better shape to enjoy it.

You will probably tolerate the pina colada better with the DS than with the RNY. But all those bathroom isssues that are supposedly related to the DS are simply not true for most of us, and many RNY'ers have just as much trouble with stinky gas and poop, so don't think that the RNY will solve that problem for you. I CANNOT believe you are worried about one trip on a catamaran every other year as far as deciding on a surgery type. You seriously need to get your priorities straight before having this surgery, no matter what type you decide on. If it were me, I would rather give up the pinas and look good on the catamaran than be a pina colada drinking fat person on the boat! If you are worried about diarrhea, get the VSG or the lapband. Anything else does carry risk of bowel issues.

Okay, I guess you did not really comprehend what I was saying. I can give up the pina colodas yes and I was using the catarmaran as an example of things we do that are time consuming and do not have bathroom facilities.  I wanted to know everything that there is to know about the DS.,  including all of the side effects, BEFORE  I make a decision that I will have to live with for the rest of my life. Also, Where did you get your psychology degree? I have already had my psych eval. and I have expressed my concerns about this matter. My psych said that I have every right to be concerned and that this IS , after all a decision that I will have to live with for the rest of my life, and only I can make that decision.  Now, I will tell you that if I can stop smoking cold turkey after 19 years, which I did, that I  do have my priorities together.  You are talking to a person with a colllege degree, two children, and a business! I do not think that YOU should advise anyone not to have any weight loss surgery, until you have a psych degree. K!!!

Um, Blondie, you might want to consider checking that attitude at the door.  Wanda DID comprehend what you originally wrote, just as the rest of us did.  (You have since edited your original post)
You titled your post in all caps, which as any reasonably intelligent individual (including most people with colllege (sic) degrees) knows, equates to yelling on the Internet.  You further post this thread as URGENT, which, for most people, means they have an issue with something going on with their body RIGHT NOW, that is troubling, and they need advice, like: "do I go to the emergency room for this?".
Posting a topic in all caps and marking it as urgent, just to ask if you can still have your semi-annual pina colada on a boat, is really beyond the pale.  Kind of screams AW, if you know what I mean.
Just a bit of friendly advice from someone who's not nearly as educated as you are.
