whats the deal with rooting for "Full DS"?
OK, that was all too much for me to read... so I am going to stick with what my point of contention is.
There is QUITE a difference between pulling a patient out because of signs of distress -and- simply determining that XXbmi has a time limit of XX.
I totally get that Janina had a CrapBand to dig out, and there is no way to know what Pomp was going to find. Digging this out could cause distress on her system, no doubt. Definitely his call.
But, if I knew going in that a surgeon had a "time limit" on my table time, that would be completely unacceptable and that surgeon would not have been hired by me (and, actually, he wasn't !).
Close to a 70 bmi, on the table for 7 or so hours, full DS done lap.... yeah, I would have been PISSED to wake up with a VSG without a MEDICAL reason.
~ I am the proud wife of a Guatemalan, but most people call me Kimberley
Highest Known Weight = 370# / 59.7 bmi @ 5'6"
Current Weight = 168# / 26.4 bmi : fluctuates 5# either way @ 5'7" / more than 90% EWL
Normal BMI (24.9) = 159#: would have to compromise my muscle mass to get here without plastics, so this is not a goal.

Dr Roslin mentioned it quickly during the free seminar they give at Lenox Hill. He said if someone is too fat they sometimes need to do it.
Of course in a room full of 50 (fat) people I fealt like he was talking directly to me...lol
I am so not cool with a double surgery.... guess that fear will help keep me on my liquid diet

Lap Band, I believe.
It's a potential issue if you're too heavy. There was a guy in the hospital with me who had surgery the day after that wanted the DS, but ended up with the sleeve. He was very large and carried all of his weight in his stomach. There was no way, even with 3 pumps, to keep his stomach inflated long enough to safely perform the full DS lap.
We had the same surgeon and Dr. Kemmeter warned me that this would be a possibility for a number of reasons. Sometimes, in men especially, they can make the lower intestine safely stretch up to the stomach. So, my surgeon said that he might only be able to perform the sleeve and then after some weight loss you could come back for the 2nd part. However, Dr. K said it wasn't much of a concern as I don't carry my weight primarily in my mid-section.
Trust me, this wasn't anything sneaky. Dr. Kemmeter will do anything he can to make it work, but he's not going to risk it. This guy who only received the sleeve was built much different than me and probably outweighed me by 60-80 lbs. His stomach was very, very large and Dr. K knew it was going to be a problem.

Janina came to see me in the hospital the day after my surgery. I went in for a DS and because of complications wound up with a sleeve. We have the same doctor. I love Dr.P, he is awesome and I trust his decision to only do the sleeve. So I think Janina's anxiety was worse after she saw me. I know she will be disappointed if she wakes up with a sleeve but she will be alive and can finish later. I am going to support and be there for her- DS or sleeve. She is probably going to read this after she comes home- remember that, please! Jen
I'm not talking about the posts in question, but I'm glad that mine was done in two parts. I'd been told by more than one surgeon that I wasn't a good candidate for surgery, full stop. They didn't think I'd make it through the extensive surgery. So the plan was to do the sleeve and hope I lost a bunch of weight and got healthier in the meantime.
I didn't lose a LOT ot weight, but I am sure it helped. And having already had the sleeve for a year and being used to it, was a good thing. I didn't have to let my new stomach heal up when I was trying to get used to the DS at the same time.
Don't get me wrong - I wanted the DS in one step!! I argued and fought for it. I resented "wasting" that year with just the sleeve. But looking back, I know that the decision we made was the right one. I had two relatively short surgeries, no complications to speak of and two really easy, quick recoveries. No problems in getting enough fluids in straightaway after the DS. No problems swallowing vitamins and supplements straightaway after the DS.
So no, I don't stump it up for other people to think about doing just for the halibut. But if someone is facing having it done this way, I am happy to step in and say it's not the end of the world.
Right now - I'm less than half the woman I was when I met my surgeon.
