whats the deal with rooting for "Full DS"?

In Janina's thread people were all wishing for full DS, Is it common for people to wake up with a partial? that would soooooo suck! you basically have to go through surgery and recovery twice if that happens....yuck

I believe the surgeon in question is starting to show a pattern of finding reasons to give a sleeve when a full DS was originally planned. There are a couple of surgeons who are known to go this route much too often for comfort.

Janina's Dr spoke to her at her pre-op testing and told her that there is a small chance that He will have to do the sleeve first, and then in 6 months do the switch. He does not like to keep people under for more then four hours and she is a revision.

this is mostly a possibility with revisions, but sometimes doctors will suggest it in other cases.  The doctor might do the sleeve first and then re-route the intestines in a later procedure, but it's not as effective for the purposes of weight loss as having the entire procedure done at once.

in this case, however, Janina was struggling with some anxiety over that question so yes, while VSG only is a possibility (I think it's a small one) it would be great if she doesn't have to gear up for another surgery in 6 months. 

And it really ****** me off as revisions are the ones who will benefit the least from a restrictive only procedure like the sleeve. I realize it is more work, more complicated but still is so disheartening for the person going through it.

Just an FYI: Make sure you ask your surgeon if there is anything in the paperwork that allows him to perform a RNY or any other wls. A while back someone posted a thread about going to have her DS and woke up with a RNY, with her husbands' permission as well as it was in the surgeons pre-admission papers. That scared me to pieces and I asked my DS doctor about it and sure enough, if I signed the papers as is, it would have given him my full consent to perform a RNY if he felt it was medically dangerous to perform the DS while in surgery. I nixed that right in the bud and told my DS doc flat out there was to be NO RNY and I only consent to the VSG if he could not perform a full DS. I even penned it in my authorizing paperwork and had my DS doc initial it. I also let everyone under the sun know my wishes, so I felt confident about it when my day came.

That's exactly what I had to do. I also told him if he couldn't do the VSG, to just close me back up and do nothing. I couldn't imagine how off the wall pissed I'd have been to wake up with an RNY. The hospital would have needed to put me in restraints for the duration.

Oh hell yes, I told my doc the same thing you told yours; just sew me right back up!
I just can't imagine preparing, researching and wanting/needing the DS and waking up with a RNY. Nope, just can't imagine it.
