A good reason to get enough FLUIDS

A couple of weeks ago my friend said I had a bad odor.  I came here and was advised that it could be from not enough fluids.

I have made a very strong effort to drink more and be accountable for how much I drink and to stop kidding myself about how much (little) I was drinking.

Yesterday my friend said the odor was gone.  So DRINK UP PEOPLE!

And thank you to everyone who told me to drink more.  YOU WERE RIGHT!!

From breath or just your body? This is the first I've heard of it!

She said it was more a body odor.  And I swear I shower EVERY day!!  I posted about this a couple of weeks ago.  And then I really increased my fluids.  I saw same friend yesterday and rode in her car for 2 hours and she said I no longer had "that odor."

Problem solved.  Yay.

It makes sense.  If you're in ketosis, the buildup of ketones creates strange odors, breath, etc.  Drinking plenty flushes those ketones out of your body.

My husband says occasionally I get a very sweet smell to my skin that is different than usual - both breath and skin....it's typically when I'm in ketosis and yes - I kid myself too.  60oz is NOT ENOUGH!

Is it from ketosis? Could you smell it or only your friend? I am glad it is gone just wondering what I need to be on the lookout for.

Hi Amanda,

No, I had no idea and was MORTIFIED.  I immediately came here to OH for help.  I don't think it was ketosis as I am not loosing very fast anymore.  I think I was dehydrated.

Protein Digestion & Body Odor

    Eating and Body Odor

  1. Large amounts of garlic, onions, alcohol and spices can minutely alter body chemistry so your body odor reflects what you ate. Too much protein in your diet, or an inability to metabolize it properly, can also affect how your body smells.

    Atkins Diet and Body Odor

  2. Some diets, particularly the Atkins diet, which focus on making proteins and fats a large part of a diet, can induce something known as 'ketosis.' Ketosis is a state that occurs when a body burns fat instead of carbohydrates, particularly fat from animal protein, for energy.

    Ketosis

  3. With ketosis, the liver is converting fat into fatty acids and excess ketone bodies, which your body then uses for energy, but which also creates excess acetone in your body. Acetone is detectable by a chemical, ammonia-like smell in breath odor, body odor and in urine.

    Protein and Ammonia Odor

  4. According to Dr. Gabe Mirkin, author of Dr. Mirkin's "Good Food Book," in an article on body odor and protein, another type of ammonia body odor can be caused if you are eating more protein than your body requires.

Protein, Choline and a Fishy Smell

  5. Also according to Dr. Mirkin, when your liver metabolizes choline--an essential nutrient that comes from proteins found in eggs, liver and fish--the process can create a chemical compound in the blood called trimethylamine, which can then give your body a fishy smell.

Ahhh  THAT'S it!   I KNEW I was eating way too much protein!

Butt seriously ..  I had not heard about the "deyhdration causing odor" thing before ..
Were you having any light-headedness or dizziness?  Did you try the pinch test on the back of a hand?   Dark urine?

That makes sense, and I think I went through the same thing about a year ago.

If the lack of smell doesn't motivate you to drink, look at it as cheap prevention of kidney stones, and helping out the liver and kidneys. Good job upping the liquids, it really can be a struggle.
