5 Loose Bowels / Day While On Imodium

You need 2-3 times that much calcium. I'd also add one iron pill of 100% RDA size per day. Won't hurt and might very well help your bowels.

Are you taking a magnesium supplement, or is there magnesium somewhere in your supplements? One of the magnesium types is a laxative--I always confuse oxide and citrate in this--and so even a little of the wrong kind might be aggravating your issue.

Has fiber historically helped or aggravated your symptoms? If it has helped, have you tried a fiber supplement? I would start SLOWWWWLY on those, like one small dose per day and build up.

Chia seeds should be available at any health food store, or any of a bazillion places online. You might check at Whole Foods or Wegmans, too.

Have you tried a true elimination diet? You know, where you go back to clear liquids and start over from scratch?

Have you taken a course of Flagyl to see if it helps?

A couple of people have reported on here that their bellies got funkier when they went on probiotics. Do you know what happens if you cut out the probiotic for a while?

There are other medications besides Immodium. Have the docs given any suggestions? A couple folks on here, can't remember who, have mentioned using tincture of opium to get really bad bowels under better control. How about the IBS meds? Do any of them work for you?

It sounds like you have a lot of your bases covered.

You might be able to find the chia seeds at a local health food store, but I've definitely seen them online at Vitacost and Amazon. I've never used them personally, but I've seen people say they take anywhere from 1 tbsp to 3 tbsp per day. Maybe someone who has used them can chime in. My understanding is that they can really bulk things up and have been a godsend for some folks who tried everything else.

"I'm not taking Iron, as a man I don't believe I should and I haven't been told I have a problem with that in my labs."

Are you freaking kidding me? Men can get anemic just like women. You'd better not rely on being "told" that you don't have a problem. Make sure yourself.

Add in magnesium to firm you up more. Good luck!

From what I've read/heard magnesium can cause diarreah, so I take calcium supplements that don't contain magnesium.

I'll check on my iron levels... thanks!

It's the magnesium oxide that they add to calcium.  I have to take Calcium citrate w D and add Magnesium citrate for better absorption of the calcium.  You should be taking a minimum of 2500mgs of elemental calcium a day spread out so you are taking about 500-600mgs every 2 hours or so.

Men with the DS need iron, ask some of them on here.  Jus****ch your labs, enter them on a spread sheet and watch for downward trends.

I don't take or need to take chia seeds, get the skinny from someone who does, I think you add them to liquid to swell them up and then take them?? not sure but the ones who take them say they help.

Early out, the Immodium alone didn't cut it for me unitl I added Kaopectate to the mix.

Now I have the opposite problem from iron and calcium...

Good luck!

There are two types of magnesium out there. Citrate and Oxolate. One firms you up, the other makes you go. Personally, i forget which is which. Ask Vitalady.

Even as a man you should be taking iron, because you cannot absorb all the iron you need from food. I didn't take iron for the first 1 1/2 years, and slowly watched my RBC drop and drop and drop, while my NUT was saying "everything is ok". Turns out I was becoming anemic. It took months to get my levels back up.

As for DHR. Have you tried a round of flagyl? It can be a miracle worker.

Scott

FYI I find that many probiotics make me gassy and give me DHR.

Hi, frankurban!
Here are a couple of threads about chia seeds:

http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/4048699/What-do-you-put-the-Chia-Seed-on-or-in/#32864865

This next one has a link to the web site I order from.  They've got lots of stuff besides just the chia seeds:

Hope this helps.

You are most likely lactose intolerant.  Cut out all the milk products except the isolate kind by reading labels and see if you get better.  Lactose intolerance after DS is common.  You should be taking additional calcium, you don't say whether or not you are.  Even as a man, you need calcium to stave off bone loss.  Osteoporosis happens in men, too, not just women.  Calcium supplements constipate, too, so that might help.

The fact that Imodium isn't working screams lactose intolerance to me.
