Flagyl = extreme nausea?

Just wondering if any of you that have taken Flagyl had a hard time with it. I have had some unusual medical cir****tances(read my blog) that led to e.coli and c.diff sepsis in my blood, I spent the better part of 2 1/2 weeks in the hospital and am now home on oral antibiotics, but the Flagyl makes me feel awful. I am taking Zofran for the nausea, but I have NO appetite. I lost 14 lbs. in the hospital that I didn't need to lose, and am desperately trying to eat to regain, but at this point have only been able to maintain where I am. I feel like those first months of pregnancy when you hover all the time between nausea and no appetite, and never really feel like eating. Guess I just have to get through this week till they're done and hope things improve after that.

Do NOT be knocking back the sauce while taking flagyl!  Flagyl acts like antibuse on some people and consuming alcohol while taking it can cause extreme nausea.

Ok, joking!  Sorry you are feeling lousy, but yeh, you COULD be having a reaction to the flagyl -- some say it's so sensitive when mixed with alcohol that even MOUTHWASH could cause you to hurl!  so be careful.  See my July 2007 blog archive on my profile for some info about flagyl.

Wanda,

Fladyl is horrible when it comes to making you want to throw up.  Take your Zofran about 30 minutes before you take the flagyl.  If you cannot tolerate the flagyl (I could not), then there is oral Vanco that should cure the c diff and e coli.  Oral vanco is very expensive, but worth it since you will no longer be vomiting all over the place.  Good luck.  Hope all goes well for you.

I am actually much, much better.  I had my PICC line removed last week... so, no more 5x/day antibiotics.  However, I am taking oral antibiotics for about one more week.  My huge abdominal wounds are actually nearly healed!  Amazingly!!  I am finally beginning to feel better.  It has been three months since surgery, but I feel like I am just now beginning to recover and reclaim my life.  I still have some ongoing complications, but, all in all, it is much better.

Thanks for asking!  Hope all is well with you!

 I feel your flagyl pain.  I'm in the middle of a round of it to help with bathroom issues, but it is horrible!!  Like a previous poster, I also take zofram about 20-30 minutes before it is time for the flagyl.  In addition, I line up a chewable adek and calcium chew as a "chaser" to pop right after the flagyl.  That helps cut the awful gag-inducing taste in the mouth immensely!!!

For me, it is the second the pill hits the warm confines of the mouth it seems to begin dissolving.  Bleh!  And that taste on the back of the throat seems to linger all day. Yuck!

Definitely recommend trying a "chaser" after the pill.  It has made a huge difference for me.  Good luck!

Cheers,

I'm taking metronidazole on day 3 of 5 I have to take my dose but I'm dredding it. The taste will be in my mouth and I'm already so nauseous with other symptoms. I'm taking a zofran because of what I saw on here and I keep cranberry juice by me I pretty much just keep it in my mouth swallow and take another small sip to deal with taste. I'm thinking about taking something to make me sleep because it does give me the insomnia, runny nose, diarrhea, terrible nausea, this is my least favorite medicine ever and I dont know if I can make it although I know I have too. Wish me luck this is so hard.

Zofran has made this way more manageable I do think I'll be taking it for the next few days.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have been taking the Zofran at the same time, maybe I will try it 30 minutes before. Yes, it instantly leaves the most awful taste, no matter how fast I swallow it, and the Amoxicillin capsules are not much better. I always have to eat something right after to try to get they taste out of my throat. I am going to see my PCP today and maybe I'll ask her about the Vanco for the rest of the 5 days I have left to go. I'm down another pound this morning, and this weight loss HAS to stop, but as long as I feel this yukky, I just can't eat enough to gain.
