Re: Chia Seeds
I did have the laproscopic bypass (RNY) June 12, 2008. Before surgery I weighed 321, the day of surgery I weighed 303 on June 12, 2008, as of July 24, 2009, I had weighed 227 lbs, I had gained 8 lbs as of October 5, 2009. I am in the process of getting this off.
Chia Seeds tend to fill you up, and you have a full feeling in between meals.
I desire to not graze in between meals, having the chia seeds, it gives you a full feeling, and I too, do NOT DESIRE TO GAIN MY WEIGHT BACK ON.
Thank-you for any ideas and suggestions!
Lynda
Hi Lynda,
I prefer to pre-soak them before using. I put a cup or so in a quart jar, then fill with water. It's a good idea to babysit it for 5 or so minutes, shaking now and then so that the seeds don't all stay stuck on the bottom. After it seems to be pretty well distributed, I put it in the refrigerator, and use as needed. I dump several tablespoons into a bowl, add plain yogurt and a bit of real maple syrup every morning. Most people may not care for the texture, but I really do like it. It's a lot like tomato seeds -- membrane on the outside, a bit of something to chew on inside. And the flavor is very neutral, so it really doesn't interfere with the flavor of the yogurt. I imagine this would work for shakes, but it would thicken them up a bit. It would thicken them up if you added the seeds dry, too, though, as they start absorbing any moisture as soon as they are exposed to it.
I'm delighted to have been introduced to them, though. I think they help a lot in "firming things up". And, they're a decent protein source. Double bonus. My eternal thanks to Lori B. for the heads up on these little gems.
I wish you well in your efforts to lose the regain.
Does having the chia seeds help you with your weight loss?
How often do you have chia seeds?
It's $12.20 a pound for the chia seeds.
For 1 cup of chia seeds, how much water should I put in a container of chia seeds?
Thanks so much for your advice. Can I share it with others that have had the RNY like me?
Thanks,
Lynda
I fill the quart jar with water after the seeds are in there. Believe me, they'll absorb every bit of it by the next morning. They will stay good for a least a week if you refrigerate them. At least, that's been my experience.
I hope they don't help me with weight loss, I'm trying to gain, not lose. They are helpful to me because they slow transit time, and my poop is a bit more firm. Having said that, they are promoted as helping with weight loss, and, in a differently plumbed digestive tract, I believe they could do that, too. The fiber is really great.
I eat them for breakfast every day. Some people take them more frequently, and I'm sure that's okay, I just don't take the time to do it.
You can get them online for less. I order mine from
www.naturalremi-teas.com
and, since I buy 10 pounds at a time, they cost $5.00 per pound (with shipping, it works out to less than $6 per pound)
I hope you find this helpful, and, don't hesitate to share the info. There is a lot of good that chia seeds can do, I think.
