I will be 18 months out next week and I've done the protein shakes since the start. I enjoy the taste of the ones I make and I love knowing that whatever food I eat is just an added bonus. I normally have 2 shake a day with 1 1/2 scoops in each mixed with instant coffee, a sf syrup and half & half. Mine end up like a milkshake or frosty type of drink.

My favorite brands are Champion Nutrition and Optimum Nutrition.

I also wanted to add that my healing after this round of plastics has been really good. My scars are healing nicely and I attribute that to my protein shakes. I hope to get some pictures up in the next couple of days.

I have champion chocolate here at home and would love to know how you make your coffee drink
I owed it to myself to research the duodenal switch before consenting to any other weight loss surgery and so do you.  Check out DSFacts.com and DuodenalSwitch.com for more information.  Remember think twice, cut once, revisions are risky and revision surgeons are rare.

Vicki,
I just use a tall plastic cup and I add in some crushed ice, about half a teaspoon of dry instant coffee, 1 to 1 1/2 scoops of chocolate protein powder and about 2 or 3 squirts of whatever sf syrup I'm in the mood for. I like ameretto, caramel, hazelnut or kahlua. If I don't use any syrups I'll add a couple packets of splenda for the added sweetness.  I pour in a cup of half & half. I use my stick blender and mix it right in my cup. Depending on the amount of ice will determine it's thickness. You can use less half & half, just play around with it.

Still pre-op, but I attribute my quick recovery (and minimal hair loss) after my band removal to protein shakes.  I order Unjury protein shakes and my favorite is chocolate mixed with Dannon Light 'n Fit Strawberry yogurt.  So yummy!  I also use the chicken soup flavor when I'm fighting a cold.  I think everybody should be using protein shakes no matter what stage of the WLS journey they're in.

4 years out, and I can say pretty much never since year 1 (when I had one per day).

My protein levels are normal.  Just goes to show that the DS is so different for each person.

You know I do!!  I really pay attention to what my body is saying to me, and when I am not supplementing with protein powders my body is not very happy.  I think that it has to do with the bio-availability.  I can get in well over 100g of protein via food, but it just isn't the same as far as energy level.  The additional benefit is that the whey isolate seems to push away the carb cravings.

At 19 months post-op, I do at least 2 cold protein shakes -or- protein hot chocolate / coffees each day.

I've noticed the same thing...when I have a protein shake I have much more energy and can bypass the candy jar at work with ease.

I use Sci-Fit Whey Isolate which is 26 grams of protein per scoop.  I mix 1/2 scoop Chocolate Ice Cream flavor with a 1/2 scoop Mochaccino flavor in 2 oz water and 2 oz half & half...shake over ice and it is so creamy.  I try to do this twice a day I feel much better...and that's half of my protein for the day all taken care of.

I made protein ice cream this weekend and couldn't sit still after eating it!  I was buzzing around the house and got so much done!  I need to do that every weekend!
