OT-Twilight Books for an 11 yr old?

Be realistic - if you tell her she can't read it ..she probably still will, just not in front of you.  If she really wants to read it (and probably does - all her friends have probably read it or are reading it...).  I seem to remember doing the same thing with The Stand around that age..hiding it under my pillow and in my backpack...It would be better to read it with her.

I always feel that if my kids can make a good argument for why they should do something..I'll agree.  That way they have to "defend" their choice.  Sometimes they come back and say - never mind, bad idea.

I thought it'd add an update just in case anyone else is having this dilemma. This is a copy of the email I received from my daughters librarian:

"Lisa,
Thank you for your email about the "Twilight" series as reading for ------. I
appreciate, so much, when parents are involved in their childrens' book
selection and, unfortunately, it doesn't happen often enough.

I've read the Twilight series and have them at both the middle school and high
school libraries. I've had students, both boys and girls, in all grades read
and enjoy the books. I've also had students ask me about the series and, from
knowing the students and their reading likes and dislikes, I did not recommend
them. The themes and story in the book are intense at times and there are some
students who enjoy the books and handle the content really well.

If you have some "mom flags" going up about the books and things you've heard
about them, I'd say you're probably right to ask ------- to set them aside for
awhile. You may have her stop in and talk to me, too. There are many books at
the library that I can recommend that are similar in story, but not as intense.
I'll be glad to help her select something she'll enjoy.

Also, I'm not much for film adaptation of books, but I did see the movie. It was
o.k., but I wouldn't have wanted my daughter to see it at age 11 either, so
don't feel bad if you ask her to put that one off as well :)"
