OT-Twilight Books for an 11 yr old?

I need some feedback if you all don't mind! My 11 yr old daughter brought home 'Twilight' yesterday from the library & I'm not sure if the content is too mature for her to read? She reads at a high school level & I'm finding that I have to worry about the content all the time now. I really don't want to read it before her-it's just not my thing. I know the movie has been described by many people as soft core porn for tweens, so, what about the book? Thanks for your input!! Lisa

I read it before my 13 year old son read it.  It is a bit mature.  There is a scary scene in which the main character, an upper high school girl, is stalked at night by a group of men intent upon sexually assaulting her.  I think this would require some intensive parent discussions for an 11 year old girl.  Another thing is the overall theme that the main character is willing to sacrifice her life to be with the vampire boy.  The idea that life is not worth living if some boy is not in your life may be a common brief feeling for some teen girls but I find it troublesome, needing a lot of parent intervention. discussion to counter the idea that this is normal.

The one caveat I would say is that I am a very conservative parent, (my kid stays home on Pajama Day at school.  Who's idea was that to send teens to school in their bedroom attire?!?)  So take my advice with a grain of salt if you're the kind of parent who thinks pajama day is a cool opportunity for kids to have fun at school.  FWIW

I mean overall, I don't think its exactly the best thing to teach a girl -- to give up her life to be with a vampire...but its essentially Romeo and Juliet.  If you would be fine with her reading that, I would be fine with Twilight.  Its an easy read, you could always read it first if you were worried.  Oh, and I think soft core porn is a stretch.  Its written by a mormon...I dont know if that helps or not.

I have boys and not girls, so again, the grain of salt warning :)

I certainly think its tamer than something like Judy Blume's "forever" that I read around that age.
Started researching the DS in Dec 2008.  2 years and one baby later(my 3rd), I'm finally switched!

I'd say no, unless you read it before her or with her

My 12 year old has all 4 books, and has read the series 3 times already, she loves them and I think they are just fine.  I think if she is old enough to actually read them and like them, then she is old enough to read them... just IMO.  I say let her!!!!
