My thoughts about WLS and who should have (WARNING: Big Opinions You Might Not Like)
You have and entitled to your opionions and view that anyone who BMI is less than 50 is consider to have vanity to have WLS and specifically the DS and not for the reason of improving one's health and life.
You stated:
I educated others about the fact that fat was not necessarily unhealthy, that health could be had at any size, that fat was not a "death sentence"
My opinion on this is, you THINK and want those that listen to you spewing illogical nonsense to be considered as fact. You THINK you are proving fact when it is nothing more than your personal views and not even considered a medical factual standpoint. What you are saying is nothing more than what is known as hasty generalization by saying that the facts are that being "fat" without any other consideration is not necessarily unhealthy. You also state that it could be had at ANY size and that fat is not a "death sentence". All I have to say is that is totally BS, plain and simple. What you are saying it is not consider a fact, it is a personal opinion. Please know the difference. You are also confusing looks with medical health. They are 2 totally different spectrums. Please get to know the difference between what look healthy and what physiology of the body that may look healthy on the outside and a walking timebomb within with morbidity. Let me give you a fact, morbidy obesity, meaning a BMI over 35, is a medical disease that does kill. Look at the key word here that is a known fact, medical disease.
I loved the way my body looked, as did my lovers. I was very, very fat positive.
Just want to say that loving the way you look has nothing to do with health and you are being insensitive to those who are suffering in their health due to morbid obesity. More power to you but you can't compare looks to health.
At the same time, when my body had reached such a weight as I could no longer be active, I grew very concerned. My knees ached. I breathed heavily when I walked. I could not really walk up a hill without stopping alot. My body was getting so large, that basic hygiene required "extra" measures. So I opted for weight loss surgery.
As you can see, you no longer focus on your looks, but how your health was taking a toll on you and for many here who also opted to have WLS to improve their health. Right there, you contradicted and ate your words saying the fact that fat was not necessarily unhealthy, that health could be had at any size, that fat was not a "death sentence".
Having said that, here is my opinion about WHO should get the DS (or any WLS) and who should not. First, I think that the BMI cut-off is way too low for WLS. It is my *opinion* that a person can be VERY healthy with a BMI of 35 or 40 or 45 or 50. (My BMI at surgery was 72 -- much much harder to maintain health because your joints get slaughtered.)
that is your opinion and means diddly squat to me. You saying someone with a BMI of 35, 40 or 50 is considered VERY healthy tell me you are clueless to what morbid obesity is. Girl, educate yourself on what is morbid obesity and that it does kill many in this world.
Furthermore, things like diabetes can be managed with exercise, good eating and medicines. There is NO evidence yet to suggest that WLS will make someone live any longer than having no WLS but having diabetes with healthy behaviors.
I see so many people who have WLS while in the 200s (usually BMIs under 50) who do it because they feel "gross" or "disgusting" because they are fat. Damn, this is the horrible effects of society's fatism.
Again, morbid obesity is a medical disease that kills and has nothing to do with the vanity of feeling gross or disgusting because they are fat. A person may feel gross or digusting with having immobilty or not having the quality of life or to be able to be independent to perform the simple task of every day life. Again, one thing is vanity that you have and another is health and quality of life to live without being a prisoner in their own body.
I have been known to approach "chubby" pre-ops at support group and (in a quiet voice) tell them that perhaps they could be even healthier at their current size by enjoying movement (a.k.a. exercise) and healthy eating. They don't listen to me, which is a shame.
They don't listen because you are callous and insensitive to understand or give an iota that "chubby" pre-op have medical issues that has been aggravated by the disease of morobid obesity and once you are in that category as per documented medical research and studies, diet and exercise no longer works as a longterm investment.
We literally DO NOT KNOW whether we would live longer with WLS (DS or RNY) than we would live with a 40 or 45 BMI.
All I know and many as my witness are alive today, have their health improved and most important a better quality of life than when their BMI was 40 or 45. I think you should not had WLS and just kept on living life with your view with a BMI over 50 and moved on. You sound like a confused hypocrite.
Did you know that people with an "overweight" BMI who exercise actually live LONGER than people with an underweight or "normal" BMI who don't exercise? In fact, people with BMIs of 30-35 live longer than those with BMIs under 20, regardless of exercise!
That is a personal opinion you are writing there and not a medical fact. HUGE DIFFERENCE.
Okay -- so there it is. My opinion. I would love to hear yours.
I respect anyone's opinion because that is what it is, your personal opinion that bears no truth or fact to it. My best to you in your journey to health and life.

BMI = 23.7 3+ yrs post-op
stomach = 3.5 oz, common channel = 125 cm
A much more sensible and well thought out response than mine, Pretty Dove. Thank you for taking the time to break this down so eloquently. I just got all up on the defense and broke loose. I don't usually let this kind of thing get to me, but for any of us to draw a line in the sand like Julie has done here, is completely wrong. We're all in the same boat...regardless of whether our BMI's are 35 with comorbs or 90....we are all living with a disease and want to win against it.

Yup, and did you know that type II diabetes is, according to one side of her mouth, well controlled with diet and exercise, and out of another side of her mouth, well controlled with medication? No need for WLS for THAT one.
Hell, nobody with a BMI under....what was it, 70?....has any business seeking WLS. Nah. Oh, wait, I guess I get a free pass because I was dying. Lucky me.

Girl, you are right and everyone on this site understand and shares the pain, struggles, hardship and issues related to this fatal disease that she think by her statement is healthy, regardless of condition and group it all into one. We all had to some extent our health failing and seek the option of surgical intervention after all avenues has been exhausted, including diet and exercise. WLS is the last resort. Many here are aware this is a site in which we are or had battled obesity, not embrace it, but conquer it to better our health and life whether we lose weight via surgery or the conventional method of dieting.
She can post her NAAFA ideology where ever she likes, it is public forum. When I clicked her thread and the it was based on the title, I thought it was about WLS and those whose health was very bad, not about what she wrote about vanity and whatnot. This site is about health, how WLS improves our lifestyle and how obesity takes a toll out of us. Many here with BMI starting at 35 and below 50, understands that even with any range in that BMI, it is still a fatal disease that aggravates to destroy our health and kill us. I want her to understand, on this site, obesity is an impairment to daily life and one's health. It is not a focus of our outer shell, but our insides and how it affects our lives and mortality. When I read what she wrote, all that went through my mind was, it is all about looks and she never dealt with the hell I had being a prisoner of my own body and not able to live life because it was very limited that I needed assistance and my health wouldn't let me appreciate life either.

I doubt you want to hear my opinion Julie, but I'm going to give it to you anyway. IMO your post is idiotic. You seem to think it's OK to lump everyone with a less than 50 BMI into your pre-conceived category of getting WLS for cosmetic reasons. What are you selling? Who do you think you're kidding? You want me to stay fat and miserable so you can feel better about yourself? Take a hike lady!
We literally DO NOT KNOW whether we would live longer with WLS (DS or RNY) than we would live with a 40 or 45 BMI.
Oh yeah, well who the hell is "we"? My BMI was 40.6 and I knew I wouldn't live to be 82 like my Dad is (he was never overweight) because I had hypertension, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. Not only that, but I was miserable; I had been an exper****er skier, very good snow skier and I'm a private pilot with multi engine and instrument ratings. And guess what, with my little 40.6 BMI I couldn't do any of those things because I was either too fat or I couldn't pass the FAA physical.
If you want to hate yourself for having WLS, that's your right, but the second you try and keep me in fat prison, you're way over the line.
Your post is so idiotic, I only have two words for you; WISE UP!

Being that I had a BMI of over 60 when I had my revision I am assuming that in your opinion it was alright. I met your criteria I was over 35yo and my BMI was high enough. I have always been anywhere from pudgy to obese and all along the way I never let being fat stop me from doing anything that I ever wanted to and I had no co-morbidities at all the only problem I had was a severely under active thyroid that was not the cause for my massive weigh gain over the years. But was I happy.......NO. Sure I have great friends and family and I did not shut myself in the house I just lived my life, but that is all I was doing was living life I was not enjoying life.
It just seems rather hipocrtical to me that you would post on here that lightweights should just diet and exercise to get weight off. They could have the same problems at 250 that some have at 500. I will use Lori for example, she is a tiny framed person so carrying around an extra 100+ pounds can be just as difficult on her body. I am just saying I think you are judging before you know all the facts on why people decided to had WLS.
