distal bypass vs ds surgery (long)

What Diana said. (grin*)

Really---Diana has been here a LOOOOONG time, and she knows what's what. I've been here nearly as long, and I'll be 5 years post-DS come December. Given a choice between winning the Powerball and having the DS, I'd take the DS every time---it's made THAT much difference in my life.

When I started researching WLS, there were only two choices---the LapBand and the RNY. Both of them scared the crap outta me. but I felt that if I didn't do SOMETHING, I was gonna die. Soon.

Thanks to the powers that be, I went to a local support group where I met two ladies who were 18 months out from their DS. Both of them were happy, healthy, and---were going to Shoney's for a hot fudge Sundae after the support group. (I immediately decided the DS was THE WLS for me. *grin*)

I went home, and did some research. I decided the DS WAS the bestr thing for me, and I've never had a moment's regrets.

Do YOUR research before you make your final decision.

Think twice, cut once.

Thank you every body for the replies...I knew things happened for a reason....the things he said just didn't make since...I just wanted to see if the DS community saw what I saw.... plus he's expensive...I spent lots of hours online...I even saw that and i haven't seen many people with a distal...only when their pouches have failed...the whole operation seems like a contradiction gotta eat more but can't because of the pouch....oh well..not 4 me thanks..

He doesn't give a damn about you. He cares about lining his pocket. He is what we call a "bait and don't switch" surgeon, which is a reprehensible, unethical behavior. I would, and did, walk out of a surgeon's office just for that reason. It's WRONG for a surgeon to advertise that s/he does a procedure he doesn't do, just to attract traffic and then hard sell his/her pet procedure with bull**** scare tactics.

What you have experienced is all too common. You are within a short trip of a whole bunch of DS surgeons. Take your pick: NYC, Philly, Willingboro or Scranton.

Here's what the independent medical reviewer put in his report overturning my HMO for my request for the DS:

A 55-year-old female enrollee has requested laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) bariatric surgery for the treatment of her morbid obesity. Findings: The physician reviewer found that with a BMI of 39 and comorbid conditions this patient meets nationally accepted medical necessity criteria for consideration of weight loss surgery. Peer reviewed articles demonstrate superior weight loss and maintenance of weight loss over the long term with BPD/DS as compared to other surgical procedures. The published data also demonstrates that the Roux-en-Y procedure offers no advantage in regard to protein calorie malnutrition and may even have more severe consequences. This patient has significant metabolic syndrome, and BPD/DS is the treatment of choice for her obesity.

Run to the nearest real DS surgeon!

I'm not going back I've been big this long I might as well get what I want and if I'm going to do it I'll do it right ...this kinda reminds me of how we say the insurance company rather pay to treat obesity than offer a way to help it...PROPERLY...
