DS Pioneer Gives Up On DS - For Lapband???
I share the same hesitation......I know people even here on the boards who don't take their supplements seriously. One or two who come to mind USED to post regularly, and then as their behaviour became out of control, they disappeared......consciously or unconsciously hiding the evidence.
But non-compliance is also part in parcel of a failure to comprehend WLS in general. Some people just don't get it. They don't know what is being done to them, and they don't know how to deal with it, so just ignore it until it's too late.
Two of the scariest posts I ever read on this board (OH in general, not the DS board) were a) a RNY patient two weeks before surgery who asked "why do they remove your intestines". She'd been explaining the surgery to her mom, and her MOM asked that. Two weeks from surgery, and she had NO idea what was about to happen to her - and didn't even have sense enough to question her misunderstanding about intestinal rerouting. To me - THAT woman should have failed the psyche test.
The other post was a bandster who said she chose it because "they don't really have to operate on you". She didn't seem to get that she was going to be sliced open with a scalpel under anesthesia.
That's one fortunate thing about the DS - it's harder to find, and that tends to weed out the lemmings who are just doing it because everyone else is, or because they left their choice up to their doctor. One day, we'll be better known, and we'll have more horror stories like that of people who just didn't understand what they were getting themselves into.

Simpson doesn't want the responsibility of non-compliant DSers on his watch. Same reason we don't want converts that are easily distracted by the smokescreen of stupidity looking into the DS. The DS is NOT a toy and not for those incapable of understanding the serious nature in which their anatomy has been altered by the procedure and the diligence that is required to stay healthy.
Amen! The DSers on the boards are, I would guess, in the top 20% as far as compliance and knowing what it takes to stay healthy post-op. The bottom 20% that don't do the required follow-up care create problems for all of us. There are people who I do not tell about the DS because I know they could not/would not do the follow-up care

This isn't exclusively a DS issue. While your compliance issues are primarily related to supplements, ours are largely dietary. While some patients' procedures fail them, still others fail the procedure by refusing to educate themselves about what it is they are actually getting and how it works, or worse yet, refusing to understand and follow the specific instructions of their surgical team. I was lucky-- pain not withstanding-- I knew that RNY compliance was gonna suck, and accepted it anyway. I know I have a higher chance of regain, and my only shot at staying on the healthier side of that coin is compliance. Whether I have the temerity to do so lifelong is anyone's guess.
-------------------
Here's one from the archives: A woman comes into the RNY forum and says, "I couldn't help it-- I am four days post op and just ate 10 hot buffalo chicken wings, and now I have this terrible pain..." I know a lot of DSer's who'd say, "Any surgery worth a damn should be able to stand up to eatin' wings-- this woman's surgery failed her." But if you were warned about it, knew it was a limitation of your surgical choice, and you did it anyway, *you* failed it. If you weren't warned-- shame on your surgeon, but also shame on you-- how can you have $20k worth of surgery and your intestines mangled and refuse to find out what the best practices are to keep the damn thing running right?
--------------------
Now, there's a third category too-- people like myself who have odd permutations of the surgery and no one knows how to prepare them correctly. I feel a little sorry for those people, but mostly I'd advise them to educate themselves as best they can, experiment, and find out what works for you. Sometimes, ya gotta trailblaze. It'd be nice if they told you that upfront, though.
