Body Odor

Yup, that's what the guy said in his post that I linked -- that he's Canadian, and that's why he spells odour with a "U."  haha!

Oops.  Sorry, I lied, too!!  ;)  I said I read it on the DS Yahoo group and it was the DS PacLap group.  I asked what kind of odor they were talking about.   This was the response: Mandy - There are two distinct problems here. The more common is controlling the odors from bowel movements or gas. This pretty much has to be done by experimentation on an individual basis. For some, it's lactose intolerance. For others, it's certain carbs. There have been many and long discussions of this which you can look up in the archives. It's something that usually gets worked out within reasonable time after surgery. There are also some really good odor neutralizers to keep with you and in the bathroom; our favorite is Medi-Aire, easily purchased on-line. A much rarer reaction is a smell that actually does seem to come out of the pores. It's not constant and not everybody seems sensitive to the smell. There are folks who have worked out solutions to this problem as well, including my husband, XXXX.  Definitely not unheard of, but certainly very rare.

I feel I need to keep reminding you of this fact...the JIB is not the DS, nor are the similar operations.  The JIB lead to severe issues with bacterial overgrowth because of an unused poriton of intestine. In that loop bacteria would overgrow causing all kinds of issues even death.  In addtion, the malabsorbtion issues were different,  again they are not the same operation.  DSers do not have body odor issues. I am finally getting the idea of where BMUScottie is coming from.  He does not want me getting on a DS forum and carrying on about non-DS problems.  It's confusing to newbies reading it. Well, best I can do is to start every post with a disclaimer, insuring that everyone understands that I am not discussing the DS. I will do so, cuz I also want those considering the DS to be clear in their mind what does, and does not, refer to the DS.

Please don't take anything personally, Don. We fight an uphill battle here to get the DS the attention and respect it deserves and there are many who grasp onto any little thing just to defame it.  We're happy to help you any way we can. But, the disclaimer might not be a bad idea......

Yup, what Kelly said.  And if you forget the disclaimer, we'll be glad to add it for you in our replies to your posts!  LOL!

Also, Don.....I did meet that lady that had also had the JIB and was warning her how the ASBS recommends that everyone having the JIB get it revised to a different type of surgery because of all the liver and kidney failure issues with the JIB.  Dr. Husted (a renowned DS surgeon) said that if she's NOT having issues, it is fine for her to be left as is.)  Are you FINE as is?  How are your labs?  It's imperative that you stay on top of those things.  I can't remember if you've already told us this, but I have to withdraw my suggestion to you to try the flagyl until I know what kind of shape your liver is in!

The flagyl is expected in any day now.  I don't doctor regularly. Twice friends forced me to go to the ER (5/95 and 6/98), each time I was admitted for several days of observation following a bout of skin lesions related to bacterial overgrowth.  Each time, once they got up to date on what the JIB was, they were unconcerned about sugar, blood pressure, or seemingly any other major problem. They seemed quite pleased with my overall health.  Of course they did plenty of blood tests. I always ***** my finger once a month pre-prandial. Always precisely normal. I don't drink, though when I try, two glasses of wine make me plenty uncomfortable (sick). The Red Cross blood center says my iron levels are borderline, so I don't donate anymore and I supplement iron.  I gobble down 3 Centrum Seniors each day.  Eat a healthy diet, varied and proper according to most everyone.  Not big on exercise though :-) Now I better start learning about liver disease. And I need to put more time in on "my story" and get it uploaded. Bottom line is that I don't do doctors.  I hit Medicare in less than two years.  Then I will know.

Okay, Don.  I'm sitting here reading this and just shaking my head.  I'm ASSUMING that us DSers have LESS malabsorption issues than you do with your JIB, and we take a HELLUVA lot more vitamins than 3 multis a day.  We also take DRY (formulated to be water soluble since we can't absorb fat) versions of the fat soluble vitamins (ADE&K), and often we have to take those in MEGA doses.  Getting to a yearly doctor's exam and labwork is an ABSOLUTE MUST to see what supplements we may be lacking in.  We also take a lot of CALCIUM CITRATE so our bones don't crumble when we get to retirement age!  See what I'm sayin'?  We eat a lot of protein because we malabsorb that as well.

vitalady Contact this lady and ask her about what vitamins you should start taking!

OOOH Don! The Iron levels can be addressed like LeaAnn said.  Vitalady has an Iron supplement that is gentle on us called TenderIron I think...you could benefit from that at the very last. How about Vitamin D? She also carries a small pill that packs a wallop of Vitamin D....I know you said you don't D Dr.'s but this may be an ounce of prevention so you don't have to.....
