I am in the process of getting paperwork to gether for work and they are asking me how long I will be out. I am not sure. I have seen or heard three weeks, six weeks, and one person I know took ten. You can see my confusion. I do understand that everyone is different. But, what is the average?

Gary, if you have STD I would tell them it could be 2-6 weeks depending on how you do....its kinda tough to say you can do 2 weeks if you are doing an open procedure.....but if you are doing laproscopic perhaps 2 weeks is good. Too many variables and everyone is different. I did 6 weeks. I had open RNY, and well I probably could have went back in 4 weeks but took the extra two to get in a system for eating. All that changes so you have to get organized with that and it was easier to stay home through the liquid phase of the surgery then to go to work and deal with eating problems. I don't know if this helps but its my two cents. Good luck with your surgery. Debbie

I told my employer I would be out 4 - 6 weeks. I am taking the 6 weeks. My Docter advised me that the transistion to solid food may be difficult. You do not want to have a reaction at work. You are going to need to take time to find out what food you can eat. You can always come back sooner if everthing is doing well. Good Luck Carolyn

I took off the 3 days I was in the hospital and the following week. I had laproscopic RNY and did remarkably well. Was off all pain meds by the monday following my surgery and was driving a few days after that (ssssshhhhhhhhhhh! Don't tell Irgau that!!! LOL). I had a desk job and sat in front of a computer all day long so it was no biggie to go back that soon.

I took off 6 weeks...plus the 7 days I was in the hospital. It all depends on your body so that's why there is such a big difference. I also worked in a group home and had to deal with MR/DD adults who liked to kick and hit me so I decided to take a little extra time out to heal. My Dad was only in the hospital for 4 days... and he went back to work 3-4 weeks after. I had complications so I had to stay in the hospital a little longer. I was doing great but I spiked a fever and infection around the 4th day so I had to stay. Good luck with your upcomng surgery~~
