OT- Relocating to Delaware
I am contemplating relocating to Delaware and need some info as soon as possible. I am located in NY. As such, I am trying to find out some information on areas within Sussex, Kent and New Castle Counties. Also, which areas are close to my office in Wilmington. I have 3 little ones so I would need a good school district as well. Any information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi there. If you ae going to be working in Wilmington, you definitely want to live in New Castle or Kent Counties. Sussex would be about a 2 hour drive every day in then another 2 hour drive home. Not fun. Kent county is even pushing it unless you like to drive.
I understand that Appaquinamink School District is the best in Delaware. That is in the Middletown / Odessa area. Still mostly New Castle County.
I'm a real estate paralegal for a firm in Wilmington. So I would be happy to hook you up with a great realtor if you need help. Or I can tell you good and bad things about a lot of neighborhoods. Even get you copies of deed restrictions (fences, pools, pets), if you would like.
If you don't mind me asking, what company will you be working for? The big ones in WIlmington are BAnk of America and AIG, Beneficial, Citibank or MBNA (phasing out) plus TONS of lawyers.
Good luck.
Wow Jennifer, thanks for the info. New Castle definitely seems the place that I would need to live to get to work. I do drive, but since I would have the kids, I don't want to live anywhere that's a hike to commute to work and home. I don't know anything about the good or bad neighborhoods in New Castle so any information you can give me on that it would be great. I am/will be working for Skadden Arps. I really want to go with a new construction home, since I am a first-time buyer and don't want the expense of having to do costly repairs right off.
Hello,
I am a realtor with ReMax and have been for 12 years. Before that I was a real estate paralegal. Born and raised in Delaware. I live in Hockessin but also have a place in Sussex County at the beach. I know Delaware pretty well.
New Castle County is the area closest to Wilmington. Actually Wilmington is in New Castle County.
Feel free to call me and I'll be happy to e-mail you info on housing that meets your specific criteria.

Hey Leolady,
Skadden Arps is a great place to work. My mother worked there until she passed away and my friend Larry Morton is a bankrupty paralegal with the firm. I understand that they expect 120% from their employees. Good luck. Let me know if I can be of any more help.
Beware of new construction....ask about the builder before you put down money. Some aren't as reputable as others...even if they seem like it.
See I told ya you'd get mucho help if you posted over here!!! This is a fantastic group of people. Very supportive!!!
Middletown has the best rated schools. But there's very good schools in each district. The good thing about Delaware is you can Choice you kids into any school you want. You just gotta fill out an application and take a chance. I live in Red Clay district and am within walking distace of an elementary school that I wasn't fond of. I choiced my daughter into Brandywine Springs Elementary which is an excellent school. Now it's going to go up to the 8th grade so I'm thrilled with that. Red Clay also has AI HS which is also top rated. My nephew will be attending the Delaware Military Academy which is a choice only HS. We also have the Cab Calloway School of the Arts which is excellent! We have several really good Vo-tech HS's too as well as some top-notch private schools.
Maybe when you come down for a visit, you can coordinate it with one of the support group meetings and you can meet the gang! You certanily won't lack for guidance and good advice and friendship!
Dineen,
Just an FYI...re school choice. It's not as easy with Brandywine Springs as it was before. My sister is a resident of Red Clay and a teacher in Red Clay (11 yrs) and just tried to choice her son into Brandywine Springs as her first choice and Forest Oak as her second. She got turned down yesterday for both. My cousin is one of the kindergarten teachers there and she said that the school is closed to choice at the moment!

Wow, I wonder if that's because of the new North Star school opening and them adding 6the grade next year. Of course I got put on the waiting list at first and then accepted about 2 weeks later. I made sure I got my application in on the very first day they were accepting them. I hand delivered it if I remembered correctly. I know if you have a 5th grader attending there now you have to fill out an application if you want them to go there for 6th grade. Hopefully this will all work out once they get the new grades added. There's another school that they're going K-8 also but I don't remember which one. Also if you live in the feeder pattern for the school you want you get priority. What grade is your friend's kid in? Maybe it's easier to get kindergarden kids in than the older ones. Chelsea's been there since kindergarden.
