Bonnie,
I tried to answer this post twice but my messages keep getting lost in internet space. So please forgive me if there happens to be several answers to this some time down the road!
Thanks so much for your care, prayer and concern. It is greatly appreciated. I did get the numbers from Vickies post and forwarded them to my friends. Hopefully we can help him.
At any rate, again Bonnie thank you. You all are so wonderful coming to aid of a complete stranger who is in need of help.
Hugs,
Tammy
Here is an update as I understand it ...
The guy was in the hospital and diagnosed with blood clots in the legs last week. Because of some kind of mix up with the testing and etc ... his HMO would not allow him to stay any longer and he was sent home.
Then last Monday he started having trouble breathing and was sent to the hospital for tests on STAT order to see if his lungs were clear. First test they "lost" the dye and had him come back for a second test which they did without dye.
The family spent the entire week trying to find out the results of the test all the while hubby had more and more trouble breathing which is now severe with horrible pain. Finally after a huge battle on Friday the wife was able to get them to at least admit that test had been run, and that the results were inconclusive. He was then told to wait to see how it goes until Monday. WHAT???
By Monday, wife was furious and started stomping and further demanding action. She threatened to take out of area and they suddenly decided to admit him through the ER for testing. Again, they did the testing without dye and said that most likely the tests would not be accurate. ER doc said that nothing is wrong, simply a case of chest congestion and sent him home with an antibiotic.
The family wants to believe that it is nothing more ... I think that is in not a wise move to accept this diagnosis before being able to rule out a pulmonary embolism first. I would feel a lot better knowing that the appropriate testing had been done WITH conclusive results. They tell me that their HMO won't allow the docs to do the test that they originally requested. The docs said with his size he needs that test ... the HMO disagrees. Doc told him yesterday that if he lived through a PE then there is nothing to worry about and nothing more they can do for him. They also said that his trouble breathing is from his sleep apnea, even though it was a sudden onset right after he was diagnosed with blood clots and deep vein thrombosis??? I find myself simply shaking my head in disbelief. I don't know ... it is all so confusing to me. Perhaps I am missing something and their truly is nothing to worry about???
***WARNING WARNING***Stepping up onto my soapbox***
Once again, more proof that we are our own best advocates when it comes to our medical needs. We NEED to make sure we are as informed as possible about our surgery and life/needs post op and be willing to vocalize/share those needs with our medical staff. Obviously take into consideration their suggestions, but not be shy about sharing information that we find in our course of study either. I no longer accept blanket statements ... I NEED to know why a particular course is recommended. More often than not, they have information that I do not have and it all makes complete sense, but every once in a while, I can offer them information that makes a difference in the suggested course of treatment. Remember, not all docs are overly familiar with this field of study. Some are extremely well versed, and others are just pioneers.
At any rate, I will step off my soap box once again to ask for continued prayer for this family. Again, everyone ... thanks so much!
Hugs,
Tammy
