Hi everyone I live IN AR. But am from Delaware. I am having surgery 11-1-05. They do not post much in my state because they do not do alot of WLS here. My Dr. said he leaves the tudes in for 10 days. Is this the thing that most do? My brother had WLs and did not have them at all. Any info would helpful. Thanks God Bless

Hello, I have never heard of surgery tubes. I am actually post-op and I never had these. Christie

Hi there! If you're talking about the drainage tube, mine was removed the day I was released from the hospital. I assume that if there are complications, you may have to have the drainage tube for longer, but your surgeon would be the best one to ask. Good luck & keep us posted!!

I have heard of that with Open RNY. Be prepared, it's nasty. You've got to drain the tubes yourself I think. I don't think I would've been able to have one after I went home, it sceeved me out for the 2 days I was in the hospital. Make sure you have loose clothing to wear post up until the tube comes out. Follow your doctor's orders. I've heard of alot of drain infections in Plastic Surgery post ops drain tubes (these are the ones I usually talk to that have tubes still in when they come home post-op). This is why I was so glad that the Surgeons here remove them before you leave the hospital, but many surgeons across the country do not. Good luck. Try the main message board too. Dee

I had open RNY surgery and had no drainage tube. I would have preferred to have a drainage tube because at about 2 weeks post op I developed drainage from my incision and my doctor had to open it (no anesthesia) to get it to drain faster. I had to wear a sterile gauze dressing on my incision for almost 3 weeks before it finally stopped draining. Like I said, I don't think this would have happened if I had a drainage tube immediately following surgery. It was nasty cleaning it up several times a day. Pewwwww! Jean

I had open RNY when I came out of surgery I had 3 tubes. 2 were drainage , which were removed in the hospital. The third was the GI tube from the "old stomach" I still have that in because after I had come home I developed an infection which sent me back in to the hospital. While I was in there the doctor ordered night feedings thru this tube for the extra protein I needed for healing. I still have it and hubby is giving me boost, ensure, whatever extra protein per the doctors orders. It is a little iritating especially since my breasts are on the big side and don't help the matter. I also have a wound vac since the infection , the dr had to open me back up . They say this heals from the inside out. It hurts when it gets changed but I would rather put up with this than in the hospital and them changing dressing twice a day. Hope this helped. Sandy

Sandy, How well I remember the wound vac. I had one on for about 2 weeks and my Dr. removed it. I had an odor like rotten cabbage coming from mine. The Dr said no one deserved to smell like that. I hated that thing and went back to packings. They do heal fast but do hurt like you said. Hope all works well with yours. Take care. See you lighter. Joanne

I second almost to the "T" of what Jean said. Open, no tubes went home, got infected, had to have it reopened in the Dr's office... _christina
