How do you post ops deal with not having sugar? I am back on a carb addicts diet with my husband right now and I am suffering. I neeeed some sugar. I physically feel ill without it. I was convinced that I was going to cheat on the diet this morning, but I did lose a pound so now I don't want to ruin it. So, now I am getting nervous thinking about how I am going to be after having surgery. I won't be able to just cheat a little to feel better. Any thoughts would be appreciated....thanks. Robyn

Robyn, You will not want the sugar after surgery. I am 4 months out and can eat just about anything including sugar. I was hoping I was in the 85% that would get sick when you eat sugar. Well I am not. I have eaten a bite or two with no problems. For me I was diabetic and now take no meds and my sugar is completely normal. That is reason enough for me not to eat something I really don't want. Don't get me wrong surgery is not a cure all. I struggle everyday with wanting to eat carbs but try to think about protein, protein, protein. You will cope just fine !!!! You will feel good without the sugar. Good luck and remember good things are yet to come. See you lighter. Joanne

I'm scared to death to eat any sugar or anything fried for that matter! The 2 bouts of nausea and 1 bout of pain that I've had since my surgery was enough for me to not even want to take it further and risk dumping. I have never actually thrown up yet nor do I want to. I do occassionally eat a carb, but it is nowhere what I was eating before my surgery. I do have a hard time with wanting to go to Dunkin Donuts! I just tell myself that it could put me in the hospital so I just turn away and go eat a SF popcicle or SF Jello. The longer you go without, the easier it gets. Just like smoking. I'm almost 2 months out so I'm still a newbie. Good Luck. Dee

Robyn, I agree with the previous posts, you will not want the sugar. In fact some of the Crystal Light seemed TOO sweet for me after surgery. I'm also diabetic and am off all my oral medications but still need one 20 unit injection of insulin per day (I was taking 60 units). I've lost 72 pounds to date and my blood sugar is doing well. I have tried a few things that had sugar added and it gave me the shakes so I don't have a craving for it like before. The sugar free popsicles are fantastic - a really good treat on a hot day and soothing to your tummy. You'll do great. Keep posting! Jean

If it's the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet by Drs. Rachel & Richard Heller, then you CAN have sugar, just only during your reward meal. I was on this one about 11 years ago during grad school, and lost 30 pounds on it. If you can make the change in lifestyle, then it's a nice way to eat. If you can't, then... you end up like me Good luck!

Yes, it is that diet. I have been on it several times and I have lost about 25 lbs on it before. I know I get sugar during my reward meal, but it is making it to the reward meal that is killing me. I am sick and grouchy all day until my reward meal and then I am happy as a clam. I was so sick today, I gave in and had a bowl of cereal and I feel so much better. My mom thinks I may be pre diabetic because my father always had problems with his sugar dipping low and it also made him sick. Who knows, I just want to have my surgery done and then I won't have to make myself sick on this diet anymore.

Well, I thought I was just having sugar withdrawals yesterday, but it turned out to be more than that. I went out last night even though I wasn't feeling 100% and by the time I got home I was soooo sick. I was up all night with diarrhea and a fever of 102. I am still not feeling great this morning so I am going to go and try to rest. Thanks for the encouragments, I know I will do great when I have my surgery, thanks to all of you in here....I can't fail. Robyn

Carb and sugar withdrawal... I remember it well. Don't give in and give it 2 weeks. After 2 weeks you will see the cravings subside. But don't give in! After that... you can take it or leave it. Gigee
