Vitamin D
Hi everyone. It has been quite a while since I posted but I do "peak in" from time to time when I can. It has been 13 months for me now and I have been blessed with no complications and wonderful adjustment. I stick to the recomendations --haven't veared off much. I have lost 105 pounds now and my bmi is 29!! I truly feel blessed.
My question is Vitamin D. My most recent lab shows I am a little deficient in this area. I take the centrum silver chewables twice a day and also 3 chewable tums daily. I have now increased my soy milk --mixing it with my drinks more to up my vitamin d. Any other suggestions? Have you found any vitamin that would be better asorbed?
Thanks as always for taking the time to answer. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I plan to attend the woman to woman pt 2 on october 8th.
Peace!
Sunshine! The sun helps your body produce Vitamin D! Just don't forget your sunblock! Try Optisource chewabke bariatric vitamins. Specialy formulated for bariatric patients. You can get them at www.walgreens.com.
Let us know how this goes.

Terre,
Funny you should mention this. I will not be attending the woman to woman session next month. Next to exercise, nutrition is now my second passion. I am working with two nutritionist at ACAC. They have a wealth of information and I am attending all of their sessions (no female-only restrictions at these sessions). I have just started taking lemon flavored cod liver oil and omega-3 (more about this later). The cod liver oil is equivalent to four salmon steaks a week. It is really high in vitamin D and is great for people who avoid the sun (which is good way to avoid skin cancer). Vitamin D is a great mood enhancer and there are a lot of studies linking it to combating.

Short quips on cod liver oil and vitamin D:
So, for those times of the year when access to the proper amount of sun is not possible, you will want to consider an oral form of vitamin D. A high quality cod liver oil is probably your best choice, as it also supplies vitamin A that helps limit vitamin D toxicity and also beneficial omega-3 fats.
Unfortunately the vast majority of us living in the U.S. just do not have access to the proper amount of sun most of the year. Even if the sun is out there, most of us are working during the week and don't have time to go out and capture some sunlight on our skins. So, that leaves supplementation as the only practical option for most of us.
Milk does provide vitamin D, but it is only about 250 units per 8 ounces. So, one would need to drink a half-gallon per day to receive enough vitamin D. There are a large number of reasons that one should avoid drinking milk to stay healthy.
It will be important to make certain that you are taking calcium while you are receiving the vitamin D, or it will tend to take calcium out of your bones.
ACAC is short for ACAC Fitness Center. I think of it as a mega-gym. It is in West Chester, PA off of 202. It has six to seven pools, 30-foo****er slide, rock climbing walls, spining and fitness classes, restaurant, and gobs of stuff to keep you active. It is my little piece of heaven since I spend so much time there. The greatest thing is that any time you get bored with Body Pump, Spinning, Ball Roll, Pilates, Water Pilates, or power lifting... you just find something else to do. Actually with both kids going away to college next week I'll probably get to spend more up there.
keeping the dream alive. Rob
Hi Rob,
Thanks for the info on cod liver oil. My only concern is the taste. Lemon flavor? Do you think I can purchase this at trader joes or a health food store? The omega 3 fats-- are they combined with the cod liver or are you taking that separately?
I appreciate your input. I really admire your tenacity and your success. You inspire us all!
I am trying to get going in the fitness area (I had started a while back and then stopped and need to get back to it as a way of life --it really makes me feel good!)
Well, take care and thanks again. Hope to see you one of these days!
