Hello, I am out of surgery 5 1/2 weeks. I am doing very well, lost 58 pounds the first 29 days, am off of 3 medicines already and I am feeling ok. The problem is, I seemed to eat ok after the surgery in week 2 or 3 and then now I seem to have difficulty keeping some food down. I am eating only 4 oz. or less, am eating very very slowly and am not drinking during the meal at all (which was a mistake l did not know). It is frustrating when you cannot keep down 2 oz of yogurt that only has 1/2 gram of sugar in it. Does this go away or what has other people done about this if you had the same problem? I am a male here in Dover and I was 486 pounds at the start before surgery. Dr Smoot did mine in Havre de Grace. (open Roux-en-Y) Thanks for the replies and help in advance. Joe

Hi Joe, and congratulations on your weight loss. I am only 3 months out, and I don't remember eating 4 oz. at one sitting. Although, some people are different, I do know that somethings or sometimes I can keep down food and other times I can not. This stage should pass. Hope this helps. Christie

HI Joe! Congrats! Dr Smoot did my aunt's open RNY July 2000, he's an awesome Dr! I was able to do 4oz at about 4 months...and still it varies..depends on the density of the food, etc. It also depends how long I take to eat it. Today, I can eat 6oz of chili at a sitting, it takes me 30-45 mins. If I eat 4 oz of filet mignon, a few bites of baked potato & salad (salad 1st..then time in between), it takes me 45-60 mins. This will pass & you WILL figure things out. Your pouch will show you the way. Awesome job on the weight loss! Keep up the good work! Valerie

Joe, I notice that you said that you were eating better at 2-3 weeks out than you can now? While it simply may just be that your nerve endings are starting to "wake up" and are better able to tell you "enough", it could also be a stricture developing. If you notice that it is happening more and more, and or even with fluids, you should really give your doc a call. This is the prime time for Strictures to start rearing thier little heads. It is an easy fix if that is the case though! BTW - Excellent loss in such a short time!!! And to be free of three meds already ... Wow! Congratulations! Keep up the good work! Tammy

Joseph, Congratulations. You sound like you are doing great. Keep up the good work. It really takes some thought and a lot of preparation. You sound positive so you will do well. I just got back off a 5 week vacation in Hawaii, so I am just catching up on the boards. At 4 weeks I did the same thing. I would practically only get in 1 mouthfull and it would stick at the base of my throat. After a couple minutes I would foam, close cousin to barfing. I wasn't eating too fast or too much. I told the Doc's and sure enough they scheduled me for an EGD and voila found out my BP was low, stop all my meds, but they stretched my stoma cause it had constricted. Sooooo my friend, start monitoring the incidents, what and how much, who long, it it persists, call Dr. Smoot with the details. It'll get better every day. Elissa
