During my pre-op appointment with Dr. Wynn she stated that I'd be on Lovenox for 30 days following my surgery. I don't have any issues with DVT, she said it was because of my BMI (49.8). All of the information that I've found on Lovenox is that it's given by injection...great...needles I'm sure someone here has gone through this. Can you tell me if Lovenox is something I'll have to inject (get ready Jenn, cuz you'll be doing this!!!), or if there is an elixir?

If I can give your an injection, I can give you one!! At least you'll be able to verbalize if I hurt you - so I don't do it wrong twice in a row!!!

Lovenox only comes in injectable form. The nurses will teach you how to do it before you go home. The syringes are pre-filled, so all you have to do is take off the cap and inject it. Good luck with your surgery! Betsy

Hi Joni! I had to do the Lovenox shots as well. To be honest, they really aren't that bad at all...........i don't like needles either, but it really was quite painless. Not only will the nurses teach you how to do it before you leave the hospital, but there is also something on the tv in your hospital room that will give you a tutorial as well. You can ask the nurses how to use it. Just think, this time next week, you'll be the newest member on the losers bench!! Good Luck!! -Joe-

Hi Joni, I didn't have to do the lovenox shots when I got home, just in the hospital, but like Joe said, they really are a cinch, very much like the newer insulin injections, so tiny and fine you don't even feel it. Get ready for a bruise tho! Looks ugly but is painless. My mom is using Lovenox at home right now since she just had a knee replacement on Wednesday, she just bops it right in with no problems. It's almost your turn!!! LOL, I get so excited for people sometimes you'd think it was ME getting something good! I guess I am getting something good tho, I'm getting to see all my friends feel as good as I do. Looking forward to seeing you and Jenn on Thursday! Linda

Hi Joni, I am taking Lovenox right now. My surgery was 4/11. It really is not painfull. I was worried about blood clots. I feel much better taking the shots. It gives me peace of mind. Don't be afraid. It does take some getting used to but it will not hurt. You inject it into your stomach. The first time is the hardest and they will have you do it at the hospital to make sure you get it down before you go home. If it makes you feel any better my sister had to do this for years including when she was pregnant. I used to cringe everytime she talked about it because she was a lightweight. Okay I'm done now. Feeling kinda woozy just talking about it. By the way, I am looking forward to meeting you and Jenn at one of our meetings. Best of luck next week! Penny
