Help with Protein
Hi guys I am having a time getting all my protein in since alot of the protein stuff makes me sick I can no longer drink the Isopure and now when I mix my unjury protein shakes with any type of milk I get sick and dump. I heard some of you saying you mix it in crystal light how much unjury do you mix in the 2 quarts of crystal light and if you have any other protein ideas that would help. I still only eat 2 ounces of food so getting all my protein in through food is hard. I feel good I have lost 50 pounds so far I am working out at body visions and feel great just struggling with this protein issue. Please help
thanks
Hi Michelle, I do the same as Dwight. I use the orange and red grapefruit crystal lite. Safeway carries the grapefruit and sometimes Acme has it.
I put 16 oz in a Tupperware shaker cup and put in 1 scoop of unflavored Unjury and shake it up. Keep the lid on, some folks don't like the smell of protein drinks. With the top on you sip without the smells. Better for some. I was drinking 3 of these a day. 60 grams of protein total.
Good job. WOW 50 lbs in less than 2 months. You are doing awesome. The Ispoure wasn't so good for me either after WLS. Before it was okay. Milk is hard for some of us too. Try it again in a month or so. Don't give up. It's hard to believe this time last year nothing made you sick isn't it? Does watching others make you nausous? (sp) It does me sometimes. Especially if they get a big plate of food. EWWWWW. ((HUGS)) Elissa
Michelle,
Someone on this board gave me wonderful advice. Mix 1 scoop of unflavored Unjury in a bottle of Minute Maid Light Mango Tropical or Guava Citrus. Tastes great! You can find these drinks at Giant or even at Walmart in 4 packs of 16.9 oz bottles. Very low carbs. (In fact when I met with Danielle Jerome this past week, she read the bottle and is going to recommend them to her class at PMRI.) Drink two of these a day and you get in 40 gms of protein.
Also, have you tried the Hot Cocoa that they sell at the doc's office? You can make it with water and get in 15 more gms.
Hope this helps,
Donna
Hi,
I know someone mentioned the hot cocoa at the Dr.'s office. I am just three weeks post opt and still experimenting. However, I have found that if you use 8oz of skim milk in the cocoa rather than water, you can get more bang for your meal. I also use 1/2 scoop of Unjury. Mix the milk and protein first. Once dissolved, heat milk and protein before adding mix. Here is the protein breakdown of this drink
The cocoa is 15g of protein
The milk is 8g Protein
and the 1/2 scoop of Unjury is 10 g
There you have 33g of protein in just an 8oz cup of cocoa and the taste isn't bad either.
Best Wishes,

Towanda,
That is great ... I always called it piggybacking. When I could not get a whole lot in, I would try to get the most bang for my buck also in the protein department and also in the fluid department as well.
Something else that may help you ... If you use Carb Countdown milk it is 12 gms of protein per 8 oz, instead of 8 gms, although it is more expensive ... And you can also use all Unjury or other protein mix as your base for your hot cocoa. Such as ...
Carb Countdown FF Milk 12 gms
1 Scoop of Chocolate Unjury 20 gms
Total 32 gms in one "hot" cocoa
I also like the hot chocolate packets from the docs office and use them sometimes, but in the event you don't have it handy, just wanted you to know that many of use like to use the Unjury for our hot chocolate. BTW - it is also good if you add a pkt of hot cocoa mix SF with added calcium. Also the packets from the docs office may not work for someone who is dealing with lactose intolerance because of the ingredients in them. But man, they are good. Have you tried the oatmeal packets? I really like them also. Some people don't though. I like them with a little added SF maple syrup. YUM!
I also treat myself and add a spray of whipped cream to top off my hot cocoa sometimes. Makes it sooo good and yet, it is something great for us to drink!!!
Anyway, just wanted to congratulate you and wish you the best.
Hugs,
Tammy

Michele,
If you are having issues with lactose, Whey Protein Isolates will give you the least amount of trouble with lactose intolerance and perhaps help with the issues of dumping on milk. Not sure if your dumping is because of sugar grams or perhaps a sensitivity to lactose post-op. BTW - Unjury is Whey Isolates, some of the Isopure is, some of it is not. The premixed bottles that I have seen that the docs sell are isolates. Another great place for Isolates is alltheywhey.com, especially if the other drinks are a bit too sweet for you. Their powder is a little less sweet, and is sweetened with splenda instead of the other sweeteners.
When I make my protein drinks I use water, crystal light, light juice (rarely) and etc. It is a rare occasion that I use any of my drinks with milk. But if you want to try milk again, you may want to give the carb countdown or LIGHT soy milk a try and see how that works for you. Which will add to your protein grams if you can tolorate them. Both of them have less sugar grams than regular milk and may sit better for you?
Another thing you may want to do is to mix the unflavored protein powders with beans, soup, oatmeal, everything, etc. I know you are not eating a whole lot at this point, but this may help to "inch" up the protein levels. Every little bit helps. In the beginning when I had trouble getting in protein, I think I used low fat cheese in and on just about everything to help inch up the protein.
Sure do wish you the best, it can be a struggle at first finding what will work for you, go**** can be a struggle at 16 months out once in a while also trying to find what will work today also.
Hugs,
Tammy
